Hustle is a type of dance. Encyclopedia of Dance: Hustle. What does the word "hustle" mean in English

Hustle is a disco pair dance, which contains many turns, spins, twists. Hustle does not have a standard set of movements, because it is a social dance, but free, liberated, incendiary. Like other social dances, the hustle is danced for oneself. His goal is to have fun, dance, feel the rhythm of the music and give his body into his possession. Hustle is based on improvisation and partners. This, first of all, is taught in hustle classes.

The English word "hustle" is a hustle and bustle, which fully reflects the essence of the dance. For its execution, you do not need a huge parquet floor. All you need is a couple of square meters of a club dance floor.

Demonstration performances and competitions, of course, are also held. But for this, the partners train for a long time and include various acrobatic elements in theirs. The Swiss couple Roland Haller and Christina Schaller are considered world champions in hustle.

Anyone can become a hustle dancer. It doesn't matter how much you weigh or how old you are. The main thing is the feeling of music and emancipation.

Relationship between hustle and other social dances

Hustle as a type of dance first appeared in the 60s of the last century in discos in Europe and the USA. In Russia, the hustle appeared in the late 70s after the premiere of "I love rock and roll." The idea of a bourgeois incendiary dance was picked up by students of Moscow State University. Over time, the first hustle dancers, after graduating from the university, went to their cities and organized training in this dance there.

Today in Russia hustle is also famous, but less popular than Latin American social dances such as salsa, bachata, merengue, reggaeton, etc.

Salsa is a fast paced Puerto Rican dance that is performed to Latin American music with a characteristic rhythm set by a rhythm stick.

Bachata is a sensual Latin American dance that is built on close contact between partners. Bachata can be recognized by the distinctive accents of the hips on the fourth beat of the measure.

Meringue is a Latin American social dance, which, according to one version, was performed by slaves whose legs were shackled with blocks. Therefore, in modern merengue, foot movements are insignificant, similar to mincing.

Reggaeton is the most energetic and sexy Cuban dance. Its fast, clear rhythm makes girls and guys move at high speed, involving all parts of the body.

Hustle contains elements of all of the above dances, and in hustle discotheques you can see incendiary couples performing moves borrowed from tango, swing and rock and roll.

Undoubtedly, dancing enriches our lives: our muscles receive a life-giving load, our body is transformed, filled with the energy of music, we meet interesting people, our creative potential is revealed, and much more.

If you are primarily looking for new vivid impressions, emotions, or if you want new acquaintances, then the most appropriate option is to start learning Hustle.

Hustle- one of the most popular pair dances. This is a fairly universal style, absolutely everyone can dance it, regardless of age or social status.

From the side, Hustle is a bit like ballroom dancing, but it is more dynamic and improvisational. Thanks to features such as simplicity and freedom of execution, Hustle is very easy to master.

Hustle is a dance for lovers and for those who want to find their love. Surprisingly, the Hustle is a dance that brings people together and strengthens their romantic relationship.

Most of those who came to the Hustle training improved their personal lives in one way or another: the free ones found a mate, and those who brought permanent partners strengthened their union. And no wonder: after all, in this dance, the true archetypes of Men and Women are revealed. The man in the Hustle occupies a dominant position: he leads the partner, makes decisions, creates the main line of dance. The woman, on the other hand, “follows” her partner, but at the same time brings individual details into their joint dance, as if decorating it. Thus, from occupation to occupation, the male and female parts of our personality are balanced. Hustle reveals the features of our nature: men become more courageous, women become more feminine. And opposites, as you know, attract, so men and women become more attractive to each other ...

So, we will learn to dance in pairs and increase our attractiveness in the shortest distance of communication. It is known that each person has a personal zone, which occupies a space from 50 cm to 1 m around the body. Only those people who inspire confidence are allowed into this area. In Hustle classes, partners learn to let each other into this circle, removing bodily clamps, liberating their movements, achieving joint synchrony. If both in a couple start learning dance from scratch, then they work together and improve their skills at the same time, they are united by a single goal, this is what gives a lot of topics for communication. And communication based on common interests and similar experiences contributes to the rapprochement of the couple.

Training "Communication in the style of Hustle" will help to easily implement all of the above.

After completing the course, you will learn:

  • Dance in tandem with any partner or partner.
  • Free to improvise, while maintaining the interaction in pairs.
  • Catching the sounds of music like a tailwind and flying on them in a dance.
  • Dance in such a way that it is always comfortable in the dance.

We will learn anything but ready-made schemes. After the course, you will dance hustle and merengue, feel confident with the sounds of rumba and salsa, cha-cha-cha and samba.

In doing so, you will learn:

  • What is "leading", how to lead and how to follow correctly.
  • How to express yourself in dance and help your partner express themselves.
  • How to organically dance to music with an unpredictably changing rhythm.

July 14 and 15 We are waiting for you at the brightest event of this summer - the course "Communication in Hustle Style"! The leader of the training is Boris Kirilenko.

Live dancing!

Story

There are several hypotheses about the origin of the Hustle.

Hypothesis one. The progenitor of the hustle (more precisely, of all its versions performed on three and six counts) should be considered the Latin American hustle. Life was given to him by street dancers from among the numerous gypsies and Hispanics (mainly Cubans) in the southern part of the US state of Florida. In an effort to adapt their dance skills (sourced from salsa and West Coast Swing) to the disco rhythms that were wildly popular in the early 1970s, the dancers created a dance that, like West Coast Swing, four beats of a measure are performed in three movements (Latin American hustle is performed in six counts “one-two-and-three-four-five-and-six” - 1-2-&3-4-5-&6). The resulting dance was first known as disco swing ("disco swing"), and in New York it was considered a variation of the West Coast swing ("West Coast Swing").

Hypothesis two (Maria Torres). The end of the seventies of the twentieth century was marked in New York by an unheard-of "discomania". The fashion for new melodies spawned a new dance every two weeks. After two weeks, the whimsical dance was forgotten, but some of its elements were inherited by the successor. All this went on from 1978 to 1982. In the early eighties, slower melodies became popular, the performance of the previous dance movements at the same tempo led to the fact that four movements had to be done under three beats, so a restructuring of the dance was required (it began to be performed in three counts). This is how the hustle itself appeared, and those of its variations that are customary to dance in four counts are later deviations from the standard.

There is a canonical history of the Hustle as presented by the International Hustle Dance Association, as well as in a Russian translation.

In the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, discotheques with high-quality sound and twinkling lights became popular entertainment in Europe and America. In the early 1970s, disco dancing was generally improvisational, similar to the "Rock" dance style performed by pop stars of the day (such as The Jackson Five). Afro hairstyles, flared trousers, platform shoes - such was the crazy fashion of the youth of that time. A small group of young people and teenagers formed their own subculture in New York: competing in many discos in various dance competitions, most performed the aforementioned "Rock".
[…]

In early 1973, at The Grand Ballroom, a woman performs an untitled pair dance. Regular 6 count step with simple basic movements including inside and outside single turns. This was the birth of the dance that would later be called the Hustle. Young people in the club notice and are interested in the new couples dance because it is romantic, quite simple, and besides this is a great opportunity to meet a girl!

In Latino discos of the time, including The Corso, Barney Goo Goo's and The Ipanema, disco music filled the time between live bands. Couple dances such as Mambo, Salsa and Cha-Cha, Bolero were already popular in these clubs. […] There is a borrowing of intricate movements from Mambo. There are multiple turns and "strings" in the dance. The dance begins to be called "Rope Hustle" or "Latino Hustle".

In the USSR, the hustle appeared, according to various estimates, in the late 70s or early 80s. There is no dispute that in the early 80s the hustle was already danced at the Nabla disco at Moscow State University.

One of the first documentary evidence of the presence of a hustle in the USSR is a fragment of the film "Beloved Woman of the Mechanic Gavrilov" - a scene in a restaurant (Sergey Spiridonov, a stage participant).

Hustle main account

According to the same story, the hustle was born in increments of a simple six counts of "1-2-3-4-5-6". Influenced by Latin American dances, and above all Mambo, a "ball change" is added to the step, the dance count becomes "1-2-3 & 4-5-6". There was also a kind of dance with a simple count of four "1-2-3-4". However, beginning in 1975, influenced by the trend to make the dance more spectacular in competitions and public performances, the "1-2-3 & 4-5-6" part was dropped from the "1-2-3 & 4-5-6" count and only the "&4" part was used. -5-6" or equivalently "&1-2-3".

In Russia, until the 2000s, the account "1-2-3-4" prevailed. This account was introduced as the main one for the initial training of hustle by Vadim Savko in 1993.

Currently hustle in America and disco-fox in Europe are danced to the beat of "1-2-&3". The dancers who started participating in international competitions also brought with them the European score “1-2-&3”. At present, Russian sports competitions in hustle and disco-fox are dominated by the account "1-2-&3" for fast tunes and "1-2-3&" for slow ones, although both accounts are still popular in social tournaments and discos, which are danced in accordance with the sounding music and depending on the skills of the dancer.

Sports Hustle in Russia

Despite the fact that the hustle is a social dance and competitions in it were held more like disco entertainment, over time competitions of a more sporting nature appeared. The first regular Hustle competition in Russia was the Hustle Virtuosi competition held in 1995 (organized by the Dance College Club, led by Vadim Savko and Marina Rukavitsyna, Moscow State University, Moscow), which at that time brought together about 70 participants. The competition was held according to the rules of the Hustle Usa Championship, most of the branches are still used in competitions.

The main divisions at competitions in hustle held in Russia and CIS countries since November 2008:

  • sports hustle/disco fox/disco swing;
  • hustle freestyle;
  • hustle jack and jill;
  • show hustle;
  • double hustle;
  • ladies hustle.

Hustle jack-n-jill is a branch with a change of partners after each entry and music unknown to the participants in advance. In this section, dancers must show the ability to lead (lead) and interact in pairs, as well as the ability to interpret music on the fly. (Rules for holding competitions in the Hustle Jack-n-Jill department)

At the moment, there are 5 classes in the sports hustle (A - the highest, E - the initial). To move to the next class, it is necessary, starting from the E class, to win prizes in competitions and earn points.

Story

In history, there are three versions of the origin of this dance. If you believe the first version, then street dancers from the southern regions of Florida - gypsies and Cubans - gave life to this dance. Street dancers independently created a unique dance - Latin American hustle, which included salsa and swing movements. The uniqueness of the dance was that three movements were performed for four beats of a measure. Initially, this dance was called disco swing.

According to the second version of the origin of the hustle, the dance was formed in the late 1970s in New York. Then new melodies gave birth to a new dance, and this happened quite often. The old dance was forgotten, but some movements passed from dance to dance. Everything happened for quite a long time from 1978 to 1982.

In the early 1980s, at the peak of popularity in disco clubs, there were slow melodies, which required a restructuring of the dance, which is why the dance began to be performed in three counts. This dance was called the Hustle. The third version of the appearance of this dance is based on the fact that in the 1970s in Brooklyn, Kenny Gonzalez, Eddie Vega and Maria Torres developed the basic (basic) movements of the dance, and called it the New York Hustle. Hustle came to Russia only in the early 90s of the 20th century. It was first danced in the studio of the Moscow State University.

The first tournaments in Russia began to be held in 1994, and in 2000 work began on the creation of the Moscow Hustle Federation.
