This is a game in which the player will have to save himself from hunger, cold, dehydration among bloodthirsty animals that are also looking for prey and trying to survive. In the vast expanses of snow-covered Canada, there is no place for everyone and someone should die.

Today I'm here to tell you that THE LONG DARK will be out of Early Access on August 1st 2017. On this day, we will release the first two episodes of WINTERMUTE, our five-episode "story mode" for THE LONG DARK.

Here's a teaser of what's going to happen in WINTERMUTE:

The first two episodes of WINTERMUTE are about pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood, and what happens when they break up after a mysterious geomagnetic event that causes them to wreck in the middle of the northern Canadian wilderness. In the first episode: “Don't Go Humbly,” Mackenzie tries to survive in the wild wasteland long enough to find shelter, hoping for the help that civilization can provide. He quickly realizes that the world around him is not at all what he expected to be. In the second episode: "Fugue Glow," Mackenzie begins to understand the true nature of the disaster, he is constantly looking for traces of Astrid. He also begins to answer the question, “how far will you go to survive?” By building relationships with other survivors he meets along the way.

The overall gameplay for the two episodes depends on the open world and the nature of the game, but we find it fairly stable between 6-10 hours for the two episodes. Episodes 3 through 5 will be released before the end of 2017, and in 2018.

I can't tell you how glad I am to finally be able to give you the exact launch date for the game.

Another thing that turned out to be surprising for our studio and team is that we will release version 1.0 of THE LONG DARK on three platforms: Steam (Windows / Mac / Linux), Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Since the early access programs on There is no PlayStation, before we could not bring the gaming experience to the audience of this console and now that the expansion of THE LONG DARK communities will affect PlayStation players, this is a huge step for us. This means more players and more resources that we can redirect back to the game itself, so that its development proceeds in new and interesting ways that may even go beyond our current plans.

As many of you know, THE LONG DARK has always been a passion of ours, and the first season of the game - winter - should always be just the first part of the gaming experience. Expanding our audience gives us a better chance of being able to continue investing resources in THE LONG DARK world, as well as preserving intellectual property rights, and also the independence of Hinterland as a studio. Unlike many indies in this space, Hinterland is 100% independent and self-funded. This independence is the foundation of our development philosophy and the culture of our team, and in many respects it is for this reason that we were able to go so far down the path of creative risk.

I know the PS4 announcement might not seem like a big deal if you're already playing THE LONG DARK on Steam or Xbox, but I hope you'll see how monumental this step is for us towards expanding the diversity of the world and gameplay that is fundamental. that we can continue to develop THE LONG DARK the way we dreamed of doing it.

It's hard to remember, at times, that our entire approach to developing Story Mode - and the reason we've talked so little about it to date - is based on anticipation. It's also easy to forget that most of our community is waiting to get back into the game - waiting to wake up and feel the excitement again. And the PlayStation community has never had a chance to experience the thrill of acquiring THE LONG DARK. As a small studio that is completely engaged in marketing itself, we need to use all our tools to get people to play with our game, and often these people are not the ones who are looking for our posts in social networks everyday. These are expectant and hesitant people, journalists, people who have yet to discover this game. This is why we haven't talked a lot about development in recent months, and why we will be doing so in the next three months before launching the campaign. We will do our best to meet the agreed time. Most early access games don't have a chance to re-release, and we do our best to make it through. We hope you will support us in this because it is essential to our success.

Let's talk about what's ahead of us in the next three months so you can better understand what the lead time will be for. We must complete the final artistic view games, Polish translation, and game testing to make the first two episodes as engaging as they can be. This is until the end of this month. Then we'll fix any bugs we find in the first two episodes - which happens over the rest of May and most of June. We have to work on some performance improvements (optimizations) and do the whole new translation and integrate it into the game. This will mainly take place in June. And then, in July, we'll go through an intensive certification process on Xbox and PlayStation to make sure everything is ready and to go by August 1st.

Fuh. Much work remains to be done!

Also, I promised one more sandbox update before starting story mode. Later this month, we will open a test version with an update for a game called FAITHFUL CARTOGRAPHER.

Complete system upgrade
As you can imagine, maintaining backward compatibility for save over the past 3 years has caused our save system to get a little confused over time. We think this may be part of why there has been some instability, especially on Xbox One, with lost saves and some corruption at times. This new system should improve stability as well as prepare us to handle the new preservation requirements for WINTERMUTE episodes. Please be aware that all of your current profile data will continue to work - this means that existing progress on Feats or Survival Journals that you have saved will still be valid after the update.

Completely new interface
We've done a complete aesthetic redesign of our interface and HUD and added many new functionalities - too many to list here. Each screen has been completely rebuilt. In some cases, for example with Radial, we have simplified usability (for example, you can now eat or drink directly from Radial). We've improved the Pack, Clothing and Status screens and updated the HUD with a number of improvements. Indeed, in this overhaul there are 100 improvements. The FAITHFUL CARTOGRAPHER update will complete about 80% of this process and the rest will be done in time for our full launch.

Gameplay cartography
Mapping has never been part of the LONG DARK sandbox experience, but as we see growing interest in using external cards community, we thought we would add fully “fault-tolerant” cartography to the gameplay. You will have to use the charcoal from the campfires to update your own world map that you are viewing in parts, and the value of this card will depend on how well you update it. The goal of this system is to provide a useful tool for players who would like to map their world without making the game easier or punishing players who choose to continue playing the way they do now, without maps!

Throwing stones
You will now be able to throw rocks into the wild. They make a good tool of last resort against wolves - you may be lucky enough to scare one off - and you can hunt rabbits with them. Throwing flares and torches
Some of you may remember the game before we added swing. This mechanic never achieved its goals, so we removed it and brought back torch and fire throws. This gives you a useful, reusable wildlife scaring tool.

Quartering of carcasses
A welcome request from the community is the ability to harvest animal carcasses from shelter / safety / comfort ... somewhere other than outside. We've added a system where you can Quarterly Carcasses and move "chunks" around them. But keep in mind that like everything in LONG DARK, there is a risk / reward scenario to consider. Quartering mascaras are less effective and also makes you much more fun to roam in the wild, both on the Quartering site and when you carry heavy pieces of mascara around with you.

The choice of weapons to fight
You can now select the tool / weapon you wish to use before engaging in the fight with the wolf. We think this will work to address some of the long-standing claims to the wrestling system, and we will develop that further in the future.

First person
You will see that we have added first person presence to the Rifle, Bow, Distress Pistol and improved the presentation of Lights such as Flare, Torch, etc. As always, we plan to continue to improve the game as the game progresses.

Tons of new art
In addition to customizing the user interface, you will notice that a lot of the game world looks better. We are slowly updating all the labels and signs of the old item to create a more cohesive world.

New graphics settings

Due to the geomagnetic anomaly that led to the disaster, people had to adapt. Everything that was once the norm has lost its meaning forever. There were no more shops, friends, water, and most importantly a safe place. In a moment of complete despair, people began to kill each other, as the laws were no longer in force.

If before the pilot was the main character, now he will have a friend and comrade who can also be played. Its appearance will not only increase your chances of survival, but also give hope for the future. Surviving in a snowy forest is not so easy, but with a person who knows how to heal wounds, you must agree, it is much easier.

It will be possible to plunge into the storyline immediately after the game gets out of Early Access on Steam, and this will happen in the spring of 2016. Initially, the developers plan to add the first part of the plot to intrigue the fans, so to speak, but gradually update the content throughout the year. In total, the passage will take no more than 12 hours, but according to the creative director, an amazing adventure awaits you. Depending on the decisions made, you can get into special closed locations that are currently inaccessible.

In addition, just the other day, another addition was released, which changed the mechanics of death and added a new location. Henceforth, if you die, after the revival, all your property will remain intact. Well, all mountain climbers have the opportunity to get poisoned in a brand new area and test their climbing skills. Also in the near future, the behavior of almost all animals will change. If now they are more defending than attacking, then very soon you will beware of going out into the open.

Since 2014, Hinterland began talking about creating a whole story for the long dark game, which many gamers call a survival simulator. And now the year 2016 has come, and the plot still has not come out from which many people raise the question: When will the plot be released in the long dark?

Postponement of the release date of the story

In December 2015, the developers of the game promised to release a new update in the spring of 2016, which will consist entirely of the main storyline. Unfortunately, Hinterland did not have time to do this, which raised a ton of doubts among fans of the game. But luckily for everyone, the developers were able to calm us down with a slight postponement of the release date.

In the published blog, the developers said that they had postponed the release of the plot for "some time" due to the lack of improvement and the duration of the plot. In particular, the article indicated the idea of ​​creating a more realistic plot, without mysticism and unnecessary "fantasy".

What to expect from the plot

According to the plot of the game, you have to go through the tests of two characters that are far from each other. The first character in the game will be the pilot of the plane Will Mackenzie, and the second nurse is named Astrid Greenwood. Thus, you will be able to see the emotions and actions of different genders in a critical environment for a person, and their fate will depend only on you. If at first the developers promised the plot only for 2 hours of game time, now this duration is increased to 6 hours. Also, the nature, locations will be partially changed, new gameplay features and consequences from making any decisions will be added. In general, fans of the long dark will see practically new game, which has retained its atmosphere and spirit of survival in the cold.

Summing up

Of course, there is definitely no answer to the question of when the plot will come out in the long dark, since transfers are happening every now and then. The only plus that can please gamers is the absolutely free storyline. People who have already bought the game will not overpay for the established plot, and this is good news.

The only partner is the ex-wife of the protagonist, who disappeared after the plane crash, so you will have to look for her.

It's a very cold winter, so much so that the wild animals don't mind eating the main character. Wolves and bears are tough opponents, but there is something that this game will make you fear even more - unstable winter weather.

Even the methodical passage of the plot of The long dark will not give a guaranteed victory. In this game, it is not enough to collect everything that is bad. This is not enough. When playing, you need to think with your head. Eating raw meat, even when starving, is not recommended. Of course, there is a chance for a positive outcome. However, most likely, the main character will get poisoned, get sick and soon die. Moreover, no one will spare the player: getting lost at a location in a blizzard, you may never return. Locations may contain only a few houses located in an unknown place. First you have to find them.

Falling from heaven

The passage of the story The long dark begins with a small cozy office. The main character appears to be a 45-year-old man in deep depression. The story begins with a visit to the office of the character's ex-wife. Of course, this is a touching story. Family reunion is a cliché in cinema. This time, the girl brings with her not happiness, but big problems.

Having literally imposed on the hero the need to fly on an airplane in a snowstorm, and even to an unknown point, the girl also does not want to reveal the reasons. Already at this moment it is clear that something is wrong here. In the middle of the way, the heavens suddenly light up with the light of the aurora. The event does not pass without a trace and de-energizes the aircraft electronics. An airplane is not a glider; it will not fly without engines. A wreck occurs in the Canadian mountains.

Caused great damage to the entire infrastructure of the islands. All settlements were deprived of electricity and communication with the mainland. Chaos and robbery ensued. De-energized and doomed handfuls of survivors tried to get to the mainland, but died from the cold or the fangs of wild animals. Wolves and bears, under the influence of a geomagnetic storm, began to attack anything that looks edible.

All further plot The games long dark is monotonous. The hero has one task - to stay alive. He has no warm clothes, food and water, communication and medicine. His wife has disappeared and he is all alone. The storyline develops sluggishly. The survivors they meet give the hero incredibly monotonous quests to collect resources. You cannot pass them, but in order to complete them, you will have to move through all the nooks and crannies of locations, because the survivors ask a lot. It is impossible to fulfill the conditions of the assignment in one settlement. The mechanics of the game will not allow you to do this, which means you have to take risks.

As in life

The maximum severity and realism of the plot of The long dark is manifested in the consequences of the falls. One has only to sprain the ankle or stretch the wrist - the game will make you in a hurry to look for a cure throughout the location. In this case, all the characteristics of the hero will be reduced. Such injuries will cause significant discomfort when moving. Even if a drug can be found, there is a possibility that it will not have a positive effect. Unfortunately, the game hasn't received proper optimization. You can get injured even on a flat road.

A wolf bite does not heal instantly. The bleeding does not stop by itself, and the player, having survived the attacks of the wolf, is deprived of the possibility of normal movement. A bite or blow from a bear will almost certainly kill a character. It is almost impossible to cope with a wolf or bear with bare hands or with an ax. Will save only a gun, cartridges for which are considered a shortage. Finding a weapon just won't work. This is part of the overall storyline. You don't have to look for it, you have to repair it, moving around the entire location. So for a long time, every wolf encountered will become a problem. The bear will always be a problem. Killing a clubfoot is very problematic.

Darkness

There is darkness in the game and there is a lot of it. It really gets in the way. Without a flashlight, the player will not even be able to fix torn clothes and will freeze. In addition, in some rooms, nothing will be visible. The lantern consumes fuel, which may well run out at the most inopportune moment for this.

Different versions of the game

The last The long dark - version with a plot, came out quite recently. There are many versions on torrent trackers where there is no plot at all.
