The total circulation of this manual is over ten million copies. The blue Murphy, as this textbook is called by teachers from the UK, enjoys well-deserved recognition from both teachers and learners of English.
This textbook is intended for intermediate English speakers.

The level of this textbook, however, is slightly higher than the Intermediate level of the Headway textbook, the level scale of which is considered the main one in English courses. In fact, the grammar in English Grammar in Use is given in a volume sufficient to pass the First Certificate in English (FCE), which corresponds to the Advanced level according to Headway. If you ask anyone who has ever studied English what textbook they used to study grammar, 9 out of 10 will tell you that it is Raymond Murphy. I knew Murphy myself, as a schoolgirl, more than 13 years ago. Today, this textbook is still one of the main tools for teaching English with children and adults in my library.
So what makes the English Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy so legendary?
Firstly, the format of the textbook is perfect for both classes in an educational institution and independent study. Each textbook consists of 100 - 130 units with detailed descriptions and exercises to consolidate the material.
This is exactly how the author offers his grammar lessons. All the left pages contain rules and examples, and the right ones contain exercises. I really like the way the author approaches the presentation of the rules. He first shows everything with an example from real life, compares, and only then explains the rule itself.
Second, Murphy's grammar is a great reference. If you need to remember a particular rule, you can easily find the information you need in a matter of seconds. Many annexes at the end of the textbook cover almost all grammatical material in the English language. 
Within the framework of one textbook, the units are combined into groups: Present and Past, Future, Modals, Passive, Question, etc. This means that you will consistently move from easy to difficult and will be able to practice different aspects of the same grammatical category, for example Present Simple or Passive Voice.
It should be noted, however, that an important disadvantage of Murphy's textbooks is that there are few exercises for both simple and complex topics. Thus, it is not always possible to work out the material passed through; you have to refer to additional collections of exercises, for example.
Despite the lack of exercises, I can say that the grammatical material was given in the amount necessary for fluent communication in the language and understanding of most of what was said and read. Moreover, in my opinion, "English Grammar in Use" is suitable for. In general, a very good book, tested by time and by more than one generation of students.

Essential Grammar in Use ( Practical grammar basics) was written by the American teacher Raymond Murphy. He taught English for foreigners, so the book contains all his experience of working with people for whom English is a non-native language. This is why this textbook is so popular with international students starting their English independent study.
Especially beloved is the first edition in red paperback, called "Red Murphy". Murphy's first work is more suited to the elementary level, while the second blue-bound edition is slightly supplemented for the intermediate level. Maybe it's just the complexity, or maybe the price (or just the taste), but the second textbook did not cause particularly strong enthusiasm, although in vain - it contains more words and topics. Let's dwell on the first edition for now.
I want to warn you right away that Murphy is in English, and although the explanatory part is very clearly presented in it, you still need an initial English level to study it. But this problem is easily solved: there are many sites on the Internet where it is explained in detail how to work with the textbook and you can also download the textbook itself and download the keys to the exercises.
Many people who went abroad studied on their own using this textbook. This is not surprising because of the convenient presentation of educational material. On the left side of the book there is grammar, on the right side - exercises, after completing which, you can then check with the answers (keys)
The merits of red Murphy and its structure
Why is this Murphy so "sunk", as they say, into the soul of English lovers?
- The grammar statements are very accessible and concise, and even illustrated with explanatory drawings.
- Vocabulary selected at the basic level (Basic English) - used "golden thousand words"
- This is a self-sufficient work: it can be used simultaneously as a reference textbook and a collection of exercises, so it is easy to learn from it yourself
- Parallel presentation of theory and execution of exercises allows you to immediately consolidate knowledge in practice, and this most important property of the textbook is reflected, as you noticed, in its title.
- The textbook is suitable for students and even teachers, but of course, first of all, for those who themselves like to overcome all obstacles
The structure of the tutorial is simple, it includes:

How to work on a book
Murphy himself gave the following advice to his students:
- It is not necessary to study the textbook from cover to cover: it is better to find the material in the table of contents that causes difficulty
- The sequence of work with the book should be as follows:
- familiarization with the theory in the left spread
- doing exercises on the right side
- checking correct answers using keys
- return to theory with disappointing results
It is quite possible to learn English according to Murphy on your own, therefore this book may well serve as a self-instruction manual.
