Patchwork pillow headboard

How to make a patchwork headboard

It's beautiful and original.patchwork headboard, in my opinion, it will look cool in a guest or children's bedroom.

For its manufacture, you can use colorful patterned or plain fabrics. By choosing the appropriate tones, colors and patterns, such patchwork bed making can fit into any existing environment.

And finally, the most important thing is that a patchwork headboard is very easy to make ...

I stumbled upon a similar recipe and took the time to give it a try and I don't regret it.

The example in the photo used green, orange and white fabrics for patchwork pillows, which goes well with the overall color in the bedroom.

Pro making a backrest from patchwork pillows

We will need:

- 2 sheets of 19mm plywood
- Saw, hacksaw or something similar (you can ask your men to cut into squares)
- High density foam.
— Batting
- Glue.
- 1 meter of fabric in each of the four colors
- Scissors
- Stapler and 8mm staples
- Adhesive tape
- Screwdriver and about 35 screws
- Two mounts - hangers on the wall.

To begin with, we cut one sheet of plywood into pieces 200 x 200 or take ready-made ones.

We cut the foam rubber and batting into pieces of 200 x 200 mm.

We cut the fabric into pieces 300 x 300 mm.

Now explanations for the instruction picture:

1 We take a piece of plywood 200 x 200 mm and glue foam rubber on it so that it does not slip.

2. Add a layer of batting and fabric.

3. We get three layers laid face down on the work surface.

4. We tighten the fabric along the edges, first on one side, tuck the excess and punch it with a stapler.

We sip the fabric to a hard - but not too tight surface, first at opposite corners of the pillow. Then we fold the corners and carefully punch through.

We repeat the same from all sides and catch the pillow, making sure not to pull it too hard.

5 We do steps 1-4 and get 40 patchwork pillows.

I want to say that it is easier to work according to the template, so it turns out faster and more convenient.

6. Lay all pillows face down. We twist them around the perimeter so that they do not crumble. Then we take the second uncut piece of plywood, align it and fix each pillow with screws through it. It is necessary to mark the places where to turn the screws and choose a screw number so that they do not pierce the plywood on the pillows through, otherwise you can get hurt later.

And finally, we attach hanging loops to the back wall of the headboard and everything is ready for installation.

If you do not want to hang a patchwork headboard on the wall, you can do it differently. We attach to it two legs a little lower than the bed. And then we just install it between the wall and the regular headboard ...

The original appearance of your bedroom is guaranteed!

The background to the creation of the headboard was as follows. On the one hand, I did not want to pay several thousand euros for an Italian or French bed at all, and on the other hand, I really wanted to create something special. And then it was decided that we would make the bed ourselves. So, I'll show you how the process of creating this beautiful bed went.

I formulated the problem as follows. We need to make a bed with a fairly wide base with a removable cover and a figured headboard.
First, a whole collection of headboards was assembled. After reviewing it, a shortlist was formed, which was analyzed for the complexity of implementation on site. As a result of weighing all the pros and cons, a prototype of the future headboard was chosen.

So, now everything is in order.

1. We ordered a prefabricated MDF bed frame. Previously, two orthopedic bases were transferred to the workshop, bought in Ikea6, the dimensions of which became the starting point for calculating the dimensions.

2. Cut out the shape of the headboard.

3. We dismantle the headboard and proceed to its upholstery. Foam rubber 5 cm thick was pre-cut in the workshop according to a pattern taken from the headboard mold. We impose foam rubber to the headboard and fix it with glue (special glue for foam rubber) in several places.

4. Using a furniture stapler, we nail the edges of the foam rubber to the plywood.

5. We proceed directly to stretching the fabric. We start from the bottom to evenly fix the fabric, then we put the headboard vertically and stretch the fabric. To get around the corners, we cut the fabric.

6. We put the headboard vertically6 check the symmetry and uniformity of the tension of the fabric.
7. Let's get to work with furniture studs. First we upholster the outer edge.

8. We make markings with chalk for the second line of furniture studs. To mark this line, we first pierce it with a furniture stapler.

9. About the line indicated by the stapler, we nail the carnations of the furniture tape.

10. On the reverse side, we close everything with a technical fabric.

11. Getting to the frame. We glue the outer perimeter and the upper surface of the frame with foam rubber.

12. We make a pattern for technical fabric, which will be fixed under a finished removable cover.

13. We nail the technical fabric with a furniture stapler in the upper and lower sides of the frame.

14. We make a pattern of a removable cover.

15. We nail one part of the Velcro to the frame. The second half will be sewn directly to the cover.

16. We check how the cover sits, if necessary, correct it.

A quilted headboard cover can be made from the same fabric as the bedspread and draperies, or try a combination of several different fabrics. If you want the cover to emphasize the strict shape of the headboard, take a non-bright plain satin. The cover will look better if you make a lining of tarp, specially treated against shrinkage, which, however, can be replaced with an old sheet.

To find out what size your headboard is, take a piece of plastic wrap and attach it to the headboard, tracing around the front and back of the headboard with a marker. Then cut out both parts and get the desired size and shape, which can be adjusted depending on what you want to get. We pin the details to the fabric with needles, but remember that this is a natural size and it is necessary to make a seam allowance of 1.5-2 cm.

If your bed is close to the wall, then the back does not have to be made from the main fabric, you can replace it with a cheaper one. Then the front of the cover can be decorated as follows, draw the detail with squares or diamonds. Then, cut out the lining (you can use a padding polyester) and the bottom part, cut off all three parts and stitch along the lines you drew. You can also sew on buttons at the intersection of the lines, after stitching, cover them with the main fabric and sew on, you can sew on rhinestones or beads, as you like.

Next, measure the thickness and length along the top and side edges of your headboard. Now cut a straight strip width = thickness + seam allowance, length = length along the top and side edges + seam allowance. We sew this strip with one side to the main fabric, the other - to the fabric that will be your back.

On the front and back halves of the headboard, do not forget to add 5 cm from the bottom on each piece.

That's it, we turn it inside out and put it on, from below the fabric can be carefully lined with a stapler or hemmed with your hands. Your headboard is ready, really beautiful!!!

Accordingly, when choosing a bed, you need to consider everything: its size, shape, location in the bedroom, color and style. Well, the rest of the interior details directly depend on the design of the bed.

Rarely does anyone put the bed in the middle of the bedroom. Most often, she stands either against a bare wall, or with her back to the window. In the case of a window, in order to decorate the headboard, it is enough to choose beautiful textiles for the window, and the problem will be solved. But if the bed is placed with its back to the wall, then a wide field for fantasy flight opens up.

How to update and decorate a headboard

To date, beds without backs of different heights have become widespread. And if we put such a bed close to the wall, then soon we will get greasy wallpaper and an untidy appearance of the wall itself. If you put the bed at some distance from the wall, then we will save the wallpaper, but the pillows run the risk of moving out during sleep, which, in general, is also quite unpleasant.

There is a way out: to build the head of the bed yourself, since the abundance of materials for decoration and decoration is great. As well as a large number of headboard decor options. The most important nuance in this case is the use of materials that can be washed, or, in extreme cases, provide for the possibility of removing the fabric and subsequent washing. Consider several options for updating and decorating the headboard with your own hands.

The most budgetary and easiest option - a pillow headboard and an imaginary headboard - wall painting

Exit: on the wall above the bed we fix a decorative cornice or bar. We sew flat or lush pillows (to your taste) in the amount of 2-4 pieces. It is advisable to make them removable pillowcases. We fasten the pillows to the eaves with the help of ties sewn to the pillowcase or loops. If desired, you can sew several interchangeable sets of pillowcases, for example, to match the bed linen or bedspread.

The next option is a headboard-panel

Solution: buy a sheet of chipboard or plywood, cut it to the size of the bed or a little wider, adjust the height as desired. You can first fix this sheet on the wall, and then decorate it, or vice versa, whichever is more convenient for you.

The most common finishing option is “soft finish”, first a sheet of foam rubber is glued, then covered with material. It can be fabric, leather or leather substitute. Then you can make puffs by fastening decorative buttons in previously marked places.

And you can leave the surface smooth or not stick foam rubber at all, it all depends on the quality of the chosen material and on the design style. Such a panel can also be covered with parquet or decorative fittings. Very often lamps or shelves are attached to the panel.

Very unusual and original design of the headboard in the form of a screen

Solution: assemble a wooden screen frame with three or more sections, which is then covered with fabric. The middle sections should be equal in width to the width of the bed, the side sections may be slightly wider than the middle ones. In this case, the screen will really become a screen - it will protect those sleeping on the bed from the bright sun. Such a screen can be mounted on the wall, or you can simply put it behind the bed, leaving it mobile.

The head of the bed can also be decorated with wall-height fabric draperies.

Exit: cut a piece of fabric of the desired size, attach horizontal fasteners to the wall near the ceiling and near the floor (it can be either hidden or open), attach the finished fabric, beautifully spreading the folds of the drapery over it.

How to update and decorate the head of the bed - photo ideas

Well, the latest option, which does not require time and effort, but only money, is to order furniture structures of low stature, with all sorts of drawers, shelves, and the table top of such a block will be a shelf for lamps and all sorts of little things dear to the heart.

A do-it-yourself leather bed not only has every chance of becoming the main decoration of the bedroom, but also allows you to save an impressive amount from your budget. A beautiful, solid and durable product will appear if you build it yourself or if you need to replace the damaged upholstery of an already finished piece of furniture.

Neither textiles nor leatherette can provide the benefits of good genuine leather:

  • Durability.
  • Dust, wool and dirt-repellent properties, which is especially important for pet owners.
  • Ease of maintenance. It is enough to occasionally vacuum and wipe the leather surface with a damp cloth.

How to choose the right upholstery leather

In order for a leather bed to serve for a long time without losing its appearance, you need to know what quality material is better to choose.

  • The opinion that it is better to sheathe furniture with thick leather (more than 3 mm) is fundamentally wrong. It is difficult to work with her, especially without special training. It is necessary to give preference to such a material that is not too thin, but at the same time retains elasticity.
  • During operation, moisture should not get on the skin. Wetting will cause stretching, and in the process of drying, the material will significantly reduce its original size. Sometimes craftsmen specially wet the skin, and then stretch it (as for a drum), fixing it until it dries completely.

Leather products should not be exposed to direct sunlight and subject to temperature changes. But since the place to install a leather bed is a bedroom, such harmful effects do not threaten it.

What you need for upholstery in leather

To upholster the finished base and headboard with leather, you will need materials that shape the shape and elasticity of the furniture. These include, first of all, the wooden base itself. It must be strong and reliable. If this is a replacement for the previous coating, then the quality of the material and connections should be checked. And if necessary, strengthen or replace parts of inadequate quality.

To increase the softness, comfort of furniture, to give an aesthetic appearance, roundness to forms, flooring materials allow. These include foam rubber, synthetic winterizer, etc. Covering materials are needed to separate the layers in furniture details. The so-called technical textile protects the internal fillers from abrasion, increases their service life. When choosing, it is important to take into account their properties: density, wear resistance, ability to absorb moisture. From these characteristics depends on how much the appearance and characteristics of the sheathed piece of furniture will be preserved. When using thin light leather, the texture and color of the material also matter.

In addition, you will need glue, a furniture stapler. The choice of decorative elements depends on the preferred upholstery design.

Work order

A popular way to upholster beds, many other pieces of furniture and interior elements is a carriage screed, or capitonné. It is the creation of a symmetrical convex, most often diamond-shaped pattern with the help of decorative nails with hats or buttons.

  • First, sheets of foam rubber are glued to the base panel. In order for the material to be securely fixed, it is necessary to apply glue to the frame / head of the bed and to the soft material. It will take 4-5 hours to dry completely. When using multi-layer coatings, each next piece is glued only after the glue has completely dried on the previous one.
  • Separately, it is necessary to make a paper template of the geometric pattern of the screeds, and, accordingly, holes in the foam rubber. Attach the template to the headboard, mark the holes on the surface to be decorated with a marker. If required by the design, make appropriate marks on the foam of the bed frame.
  • Using a drill with a special nozzle (tsifenbor), cut holes in the places marked on the foam rubber.
  • Using a drill with a small bit, make through holes in the base wood (plywood or chipboard) in the center of each hole in the foam. A crochet hook should go through the hole.
  • A layer of synthetic winterizer is glued to the entire foam surface. It should also cut holes that match those below.
  • On the resulting "sandwich" you can begin to attach the cut skin. First, the upholstery is stapled to the plywood along the outer (bottom) edge.
  • Spread the material evenly. Find a point of skin that will be deep in the hole, sew it with a thick synthetic thread (cord). Starting from the bottom row, insert a hook from the back of the plywood, hook the cord, pull it through. Pull the threads, squeezing the layers of foam rubber and synthetic winterizer, zigzag attach with a stapler to plywood. A decorative element is attached to the front side at the place of the screed: a button or a nail with a cap. At this stage of work, it is necessary to ensure that the buttons are located at an equal depth, the same folds are formed on the skin. They are placed by hand.
  • When all the holes are stitched, the rest of the skin is evenly stretched and fastened to the wrong side of the surface with furniture staples.
  • The surface of the frame is sheathed in the same way.

The original way of upholstery in leather

High-quality design with a carriage coupler requires some skills, then the surface pattern will be neat and symmetrical. But if you have never done such work before, you can use it only partially - on individual parts. By learning, you will gradually gain useful experience and do not spoil large home furniture.

In this project, we propose to independently manufacture and decorate a bed with leather (or eco-leather), the sleeping place of which is 180x200 cm. A feature of the product is a large headboard, originally decorated with leather plates, 3 m long, 120 cm high.

Preparation of materials and tools

Before you sheathe the bed with leather with your own hands, prepare everything you need:

  • 10 m of soft leather for furniture upholstery;
  • 6 foam sheets;
  • 2 sheets of 20 mm plywood with parameters 150x150 cm for the base of the head of the bed;
  • 2 sheets of 10 mm plywood for decorative tiles;
  • 3 furniture boards 200x40x28 cm;
  • buttons;
  • thimble;
  • large needle;
  • threads;
  • screws;
  • fixtures for tables;
  • glue gun;
  • screwdriver;
  • jigsaw;
  • drill;
  • stapler;
  • roulette;
  • marker;
  • metal fasteners (angular and flat).

Description of work

  1. From furniture boards, cut the parts and assemble the bed frame with screws and glue. Strengthen the structure by installing metal corners.
  2. Cut thicker sheets of plywood (20 mm) to a height of 120 cm. Connect the 2 parts to make one headboard. Use screws and metal plates.
  3. Draw sheets of thin 10 mm plywood into 12 rectangles with parameters of 60x40 cm. Cut them out with a jigsaw.
  4. Cut out the foam rubber in size and number of tiles, then, making allowances for the hem, - the skin.
  5. Apply glue to the frame foam strips. Stick to a wooden surface. Cover with leather, pulling from the bottom up.
  6. Glue 1 piece of foam rubber to each of the eight pieces of plywood tiles. Stretch the pieces of leather slightly over the top, securing the edges on the back with furniture staples. Make sure that the material is evenly stretched and attached without wrinkles.
  7. Since the headboard will be with a combined finish, we will decorate 4 tiles with buttons. Wrap buttons in leather. This work is not particularly difficult, but requires patience and care. For decoration, you will need 12 buttons covered with round pieces of leather.
  8. Mark 3 equally spaced holes on 4 tiles. Drill them out with a drill.
  9. Glue the foam. Attach one side of the leather piece to the back of the plywood tile with a furniture stapler.
  10. Sew the tiles with buttons in the marked places, bring the threads into the holes. Pull each thread in turn, secure it with a stapler.
  11. Start assembling.
  12. Cover the edge of the base of the headboard with pieces of leather. The rest of the surface will be hidden under decorative squares.
  13. On the sides of the bed there will be small tables. Therefore, you need to install mounts for them. Use screws.
  14. Glue the leather-covered tiles to the base.
  15. Cut out two shelves 60x30 cm from the remnants of plywood. Wrap them with leather (foam rubber is not needed).
  16. Attach the shelves to the fasteners.

The bed is ready. In conclusion, we advise you to hide the fasteners with a technical fabric, then the bed will look more perfect. Install the lamellar lattice, put the mattress on it.

The textile design of the house makes its interior more cozy, soft and comfortable. But it is these qualities that are especially important for the decor of the bedroom. Beds are most often decorated with fabric, leather. Such products are beautiful, comfortable, but expensive. The decision to sheathe the bed with fabric with your own hands will help not only save money, but also create original furniture: a delicate bed for your princess, a solid family bed decorated with a carriage tie, or something else very special.

When choosing the most suitable material for the upholstery of the bed, consider not only the interior of the room (the decor used, its color, shape, texture). Be sure to pay attention to the properties of the fabric. To keep the shape, it must be dense; so that in a year or two not to think about repairs - durable; of course, it should not collect too much dust and be easy to clean with the means available to you.

In order to decorate the beds with your own hands, you can:

  • take old furniture, then, taking into account the initial data and your capabilities, improve its appearance;
  • use a ready-made product of a simple design;
  • according to your measurements, make yourself or in the workshop a frame with an orthopedic base.

Bright art deco bed

It should not be argued that it is absolutely easy to create a beautiful, stylish and at the same time high-quality product on your own. But a little effort, care, good materials and a description of the process will undoubtedly help in the work.

Such a bright bed is perfect for almost any interior, decorate it. The bed will especially favorably fit into a spacious room not overloaded with decorations and furniture, as it itself is an attention-grabbing decor. The only thing you need to pay attention to is to think over an individual color scheme.

Preparing to decorate the bed

So, first of all, you need to take care of the base of the bed. After carefully considering the size of the bed, choosing a ready-made appropriate orthopedic base, drawing the desired shape of the headboard that fits your interior, you can make the bed itself from MDF. To do this, use the instructions and description of the assembly of the bed on the Internet or order work from professionals. The last option is the simplest and most reliable.

To decorate an already finished design with a fabric, prepare:

  • Decorative textiles.
  • Textiles for sheathing the back of the bed.
  • Foam rubber about 5 cm thick.
  • Furniture glue.
  • Scissors.
  • Sharp carpenter's knife with interchangeable blades.
  • Decor for the headboard - finishing furniture nails.
  • Hammer.
  • Furniture stapler with staples.
  • Roulette, chalk for marking.
  • Sandpaper or grinder.
  • Adhesive tape if you also plan to make the upholstery of the structure (except for the headboard) removable.

Before applying the decor to the MDF parts, process the cut points of the bed base parts, the ends with sandpaper. Having a grinder will greatly speed up this process. Thus, you will be able to avoid damage to the fabric during work.

Description of work

  1. We start sheathing the bed with decorative material from the headboard. We dismantle the desired part of the frame.
  2. We cut out a detail from the foam rubber, which should repeat the outlines of the sheathed MDF headboard. Cut it out with a carpenter's knife. The task is not easy. If, as in our project, the headboard has a complex shape with roundness, cutting foam rubber can be ordered at the place of purchase or in a furniture workshop according to a prepared pattern.
  3. Apply glue to the front surface of the headboard, then lay the foam rubber tightly on it so that the curly edges match as much as possible.
  4. Attach the edge of the foam to the MDF base using a furniture stapler, placing the paper clips a short distance apart.
  5. Cut out the decorative material for the headboard. On the right, left and in the lower part, leave an allowance for fastening of about 10 cm. At the top of the curly headboard, make the allowance large by 5-7 cm, so that it is convenient to carefully lay out the corners or leave a rectangle to cut off the excess later.
  6. To make the fabric lie flat, align its bottom edge and begin to fasten it with a furniture stapler.
  7. Then set the headboard to a vertical position, stretch the fabric.
  8. To drape well the corners of the curly top, cut the fabric. Fix the laid out fragments with a stapler to the back of the headboard.
  9. Stretch the fabric in the same way and fasten the textiles on the sides of the headboard. Check the correct tension of the fabric and proceed to decorate the surface with furniture studs.
  10. Using a hammer, carefully fasten the nails along the top edge of the headboard, evenly laying out the strip along the visible outer edge (except for the bottom).
  11. Then, using chalk and a tape measure, we mark with a line the location for the second finishing row of furniture studs at a distance of 15-20 cm from the edge.
  12. We fix the decor along the line to the MDF base with a stapler.
  13. On top of the brackets, lay out the furniture tape exactly along the line, fasten it with a hammer and carnations. Headboard decoration completed.
  14. To give this part of the bed a finished look, we cut out a blank from the technical fabric prepared in advance, making an allowance of 1.5-2 cm for the hem. We fasten the fabric with a stapler.

Now you can start decorating the frame.

  1. We prepare blanks from foam rubber for gluing the base.
  2. We apply glue on the surface, glue the foam around the entire perimeter of the end of the frame (except for the part where the headboard is attached), then along the top.

In this project, the soft body frame is covered with technical fabric, and the decorative cover will be removable and attached with adhesive tape.

  1. Cut strips of technical material according to the size of the surface of the sidewalls, make allowances on all sides by 2-3 cm.
  2. Fastening with a stapler to the top and then to the bottom of the frame, sew up the foam rubber with prepared strips of technical fabric.
  3. Attach the Velcro tape to the frame with a stapler.
  4. Make a pattern for a removable cover. Before cutting out the fabric, try on again so that the product fits exactly in size.
  5. After adjustment, the parts can be cut out. Sew a cover. Do not forget to attach adhesive tape to it at the attachment points.
  6. Put the cover on the frame. Set the headboard in place.

The bed is ready. It will not only decorate the interior of any bedroom, but will also be a great place for a full-fledged comfortable rest.

Other ways to upholster a bed with textiles

When decorating a bed with fabric, the main role is played by the choice of material and the way the headboard is designed. For example, a product in a finely patterned cotton version will differ from a similar piece of furniture upholstered in velvet or leather-like textiles. But this practically does not affect the work of the master.

One of the most popular all over the world methods of upholstery of upholstered furniture is carriage coupler. Often this method of decorating a bed is used not only on the headboard, but also decorates the entire rigid external structure with it.

How to make a carriage tie

The work will need:

  • plywood or MDF for the base;
  • foam rubber 5 cm thick;
  • furniture glue;
  • basic and technical fabrics;
  • strong threads;
  • decorative buttons;
  • long needles;
  • furniture stapler;
  • drill with a drill and a nozzle for large holes in foam rubber.

To trim the head of the bed with a carriage screed, you need:

  1. Mark the screeds on the base (squares or diamonds).
  2. Drill through holes with a drill at the marked points.
  3. Transfer the markup to the foam rubber.
  4. Using a special device, make holes in the foam rubber with a diameter of up to 1 cm.
  5. Stick the foam on the base so that all the holes match.
  6. Having covered the surface with decorative textiles, start sewing holes, tightening them with special buttons and forming folds between the ties;
  7. After that, drape the edges with the same folds and attach them to the back using a furniture stapler.
  8. To sheathe the stock frame with fabric, use the description from the first project.

Such an elegant decorated element of the bed as a headboard can be the main idea for decorating the entire room. Imagine creating your own cozy corner.

Headboard with soft squares

A slightly similar to the previous one, but easier in execution, is the design of the headboard with separate soft squares / rectangles glued to the base, which are covered with textiles. Thus, you can decorate a bed for a nursery, make a product in a patchwork style or for any other style by choosing the appropriate material or a combination of them.

Tools and materials for work

  • plywood sheet 150x75 cm for the base;
  • 18 small plywood squares 25x25 cm;
  • decorative fabric with a symmetrical pattern (you can alternate different colors, patterns);
  • synthetic winterizer or other similar artificial filler;
  • stapler for furniture;
  • scissors;
  • wood glue or liquid nails.

Before starting work, prepare the wooden parts - sand, align their ends with sandpaper. According to the size of the squares, making allowances on all sides of 5-8 cm, cut 18 pieces of decorative fabric accordingly.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Place the plywood square in the middle of the fabric square. With a furniture stapler, attach the fabric to the back of the wooden blank on one side only and a little on the sides.
  2. Fill the resulting pocket with padding polyester. Distribute the filling evenly.
  3. Secure the remaining edges by closing the square.
  1. Similarly, make the remaining 17 blanks. Make sure they have the same amount of filler.
  2. Use wood glue or liquid nails to firmly glue the squares to the base of the headboard.

It remains to decorate the base with the help of a synthetic winterizer (or foam rubber) and the same textiles. The bed is ready. Good night!
