VLOOKUP in questions and answers
Why was it created, when is it carried out, what threatens it, how to prepare for it psychologically? We turn to official data and interviews with representatives of Rosobrnadzor.
All-Russian test work (VPR) is a practice designed to establish a regular check of the level of knowledge of schoolchildren for compliance with federal state educational standards. Russian schoolchildren wrote the first VPR in 2015. Since 2016, the All-Russian verification work has become regular.

Why was it necessary to introduce VPR? Does the exam really not provide all the necessary information?
Students take profile exams in all subjects not in the general order, but by choice, that is, there is no way to get complete data on how other students have mastered the subject. In addition, graduates are aware that their future studies and careers depend on the results of the Unified State Exam, so they prepare very carefully for specialized exams, most often resorting to the help of tutors and attending special courses. Therefore, based on the results of the USE, it is impossible to judge what is the role of the school in the success of graduates. In order to get a more transparent picture, All-Russian verification works have been introduced, drawn up according to uniform requirements.
In grades 11, VPRs are held only for those students who did not choose the USE in the relevant subjects. That is, who takes the exam in geography, he does not write VPR in geography.

In 2017, not all schools conducted VPR. Is this a mandatory and universal procedure, or can you still refuse?
At the testing stage, the decision to participate in the VPR was made by the schools. According to the 4VPR portal, in the 2016/17 school year, three million children participated in the VPR in 95% of the country's schools. There is no exact information on the official website regarding 2018, however, it is likely that the participation of the school in the VPR for grade 4 will be mandatory.

What classes will write VLOOKUP in 2017 and in what subjects?
At the moment, the list of All-Russian verification works is regulated by the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science No. 69 dated January 27, 2017. It states that the monitoring of the quality of training in the form of audit work will be carried out:
in the 4th grade - in the Russian language, mathematics and the world around,
in the 5th grade (in the testing mode) - in Russian, mathematics, history and biology,
in the 6th grade - according to life safety,
in the 8th grade - on life safety,
in the 10th or 11th grade - in geography (in the approbation mode),
in the 11th grade - in physics, chemistry, biology and history (in the approbation mode),
in the 10th grade - in chemistry and biology.
Of these, almost all VPRs have already been completed, except for VPRs in chemistry and biology for grade 10: their students will write on October 18, 2017.

By whom and how are VPRs carried out? Is it the same harsh procedure as the exam?
Tasks for VPR are developed at the federal level: this ensures the necessary unity of approaches to assessment. And the control work is carried out by the schools themselves, so the children will take the VPR in their native walls.

The procedure for conducting VPR is extremely transparent and does not require any additional actions from schoolchildren. Testing work is carried out at school and takes 1 - 2 academic hours (for elementary school - 1 hour). The recommended time for the VPR is the second or third lesson.
The teachers of your school also check the VPR on the day of the work. The results are then entered into a form and sent directly to a single information system so that experts can work with them.

But still, which result is more important - the USE or the VPR?
For 11th graders, in terms of the impact of results on their future studies and career, of course, the USE is more important. The result of the VLOOKUP may not even affect the final grade of the student in this subject: the decision to use the results of the VLOOKUP is made at the school level. Experts in the field of education point out that the impact on the annual assessment and the adoption of any serious decisions is not a priority task of the All-Russian verification work.
“VPRs do not affect the certificate, based on their results no decisions are made that are vital for the graduate, you don’t need to prepare for them (VPRs) in any special way - you just need to study. We do not recommend that schools take into account the results of the VPR when grading in the certificate ... "- said Anzor Muzaev in an interview with MIA "Russia Today" dated 12/14/2016.
It is clear why Rosobrnadzor needs these data. And what are the benefits of VPR for children?
Even a very capable student will find it difficult to successfully pass the OGE and the Unified State Examination if he has a gap in knowledge in the 4th, 5th, 8th grade. VPR tasks - what are they?
The task of the VPR is to check the level of knowledge of schoolchildren for compliance with the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard, therefore, a common feature for VPR tasks in all subjects is practice orientation.

How long does the VPR last and when is it carried out?
VLOOKUP are performed within one lesson - forty-five minutes. In fact, this is an ordinary test, the same as those that are always regularly held in schools. The only difference from traditional tests is that the tasks and the criteria for their verification are all-Russian. They can be held both in spring and autumn. If the child was sick and missed writing the work, then it is not necessary to write the work at another time.
Who makes up the WRP?

Most users are unaware that VLOOKUP stands for Vertical View. In English, the function is called "VLOOKUP", which means "Vertical LOOK UP"
How to use the function
In order to understand how this tool works, you need to follow the following steps.
- Create a table by which you can do some kind of information search.
- Let's add some fields that we will use to demonstrate the formulas.
- In the field "Required surname" we will enter one of the ones in the table to choose from.
- Then we move to the next cell and call the "Insert function" window.
- Select the category "Full alphabetical list".
- We find the function we need "VLOOKUP". To continue, click on the "OK" button.
- We will then be asked to provide "Function Arguments":
- In the field "Search expression" we indicate a link to the cell in which we wrote the surname we need.
- In order to fill in the "Table" field, it is enough just to select all our data with the mouse. The link will be inserted automatically.
- In the column "Column number" we indicate the number 2, since in our case the name is in the second column.
- The last field can take the values "0" or "1" ("FALSE" and "TRUE"). If you specify "0", then the editor will search for an exact match according to the specified criteria. If "1" - then the search will not take into account full matches.
- To save, click on the "OK" button.
- As a result of this, we received the name "Tomar". That is, everything is correct.
Now you need to use the same formula for the rest of the fields. Simply copying a cell with Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V will not work, because we use relative references and the column number will change each time.
In order for everything to work correctly, you need to do the following:
- Click on the cell with the first function.
- Go to the formula input line.
- Copy the text with Ctrl +C .
- Make the next field active.
- Go back to the formula input line.
- Press the hot keys Ctrl + V .
Only in this way the editor will not change the references in the function arguments.

- Thanks to this, we see that the data from the Year of Birth column was determined correctly.
- After that, we repeat the same steps for the last field, but with the adjustment of the number of the desired column.
The principle of this function is that Excel looks for a fragment in the area you specify and then can return any value from this line. You are only required to specify the ordinal number of the column in the specified range.
That is, the numbering does not start from the beginning of the sheet, but from the beginning of the specified area of cells.
How to use the VLOOKUP function to compare data
We will demonstrate this possibility using two tables. Imagine that we have updated data on employees on the second sheet. Our task is to find out what exactly has changed. To do this, you will need to do the following.
- Let's add a second sheet with exactly the same table (copied using the hot keys Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V ).
- We will promote interns to "Junior employee". This information will be the starting point for comparison.
- Let's add one more column to our old table.
- Go to the first cell of the new column and enter the following formula there.
It means:
- $B$3:$B$11 – all values of the first column are used for the search (absolute references are used);
- Sheet2! - these values should be searched on a sheet with the specified name;
- $B$3:$E$11 – table to search in (range of cells);
- 4 – column number in the specified data area;
- FALSE - look for exact matches.
- The new information will be displayed in the place where we specified the formula.
- The result will be the following.
- Now duplicate this formula in the rest of the cells. To do this, drag the mouse over the lower right corner of the original cell.
- As a result, we will see that the formula we wrote works correctly, since all new positions were copied as expected.
Now we can easily determine which employee's records have changed.
The only disadvantage of this function is that VLOOKUP cannot work with multiple conditions.
In such cases, you have to use various additional columns in which information from several columns is combined. And it looks ugly and not very convenient.
VLOOKUP function and drop-down lists
Consider examples of using these two tools at the same time. To do this, follow these steps.
- Go to the cell in which the last name is selected.
- Open the Data tab.
- Click on the specified tool and select "Data Validation".
Microsoft Excel has a lot of different functions that greatly facilitate the work of the user, and in this article we will talk about one of them. It is called VLOOKUP, and if in English, then VLOOKUP.
The VLOOKUP function transfers values from one table to specific cells in another. Let's explain in more detail - in the first table you select the value to be found in the left column of the second. If there are matches, then VLOOKUP transfers the value from the column you specified in this row to the first table. Although the definition is a little confusing, using the function is not that difficult. Let's look at a few examples.
Since the function is most often used to fill in the column with the price, which is indicated in individual price lists, let's take the following example. For example, there is a table with fruits (orange), where for each it is indicated how many kilograms we want to order. Accordingly, it is necessary to write down the price for each fruit from the price list (green), which was given by the supplier, and then calculate how much the purchase will cost. It is difficult to view each item and transfer data, especially if there are thousands of lines with goods, so VLOOKUP is applicable.
Click the top cell in the first table in the Price column, and then the "fx" button in the formula bar to open the Function Wizard window.
The next thing we do is write the arguments in the proposed fields.
Put italics in the field "Lookup_Value" and select in the first table the value that we will look for. I have this apple.
In the line "Table" it is necessary to select the one from which the data will be taken - do not select the header. Note that the leftmost column must contain the values we are looking for. That is, I need an apple and other fruits, which means that their list should be in the left column of the selected area.
So that after we write the formula and stretch it over the entire column, the selected range does not move down, you need to make the links absolute: select the data in the field and press "F4". Now the address to the cells has become absolute, the "$" sign has been added to them, and the range will not shift.
Where there is a column number, put the number corresponding in the second table to the column where the data needs to be transferred from. My price consists of fruits and prices, I need the second, so I put the number "2".
IN "interval_view" we write "FALSE" - if you need to look for exact matches, or "True" - if the values can be approximate. For our example, we choose the first one. If you do not specify anything in this field, then the second one will be selected by default. Then press "OK".
Here, pay attention to the following, if you work with numbers and specify "True", then the second table (this is our price list) must be sorted in ascending order. For example, when searching for 5.25, 5.27 will be found and the data from this line will be taken, although the number 5.2599 may still be lower - but the formula will not look further, because it thinks that there is only more below the number.
How does the VPR work? It takes the value it is looking for (an apple) and looks for it in the leftmost column of the specified range (a list of fruits). If it matches, the value is taken from the same line, only the column specified in the arguments (2), and transferred to the cell we need (C2). The formula looks like this:
VLOOKUP(A2,$G$2:$H$12,2,FALSE)
Now you can stretch it to the required number of lines down by pulling the lower right corner.
All prices have been transferred from the price list to the purchase table in accordance with the names of fruits.
If you have the names of products in the first table that are not in the price list, I have vegetables, then in front of these items, the VLOOKUP formula will generate an error # N / A .
When you add columns to a sheet, the data for the "Table" argument of the function will automatically change. In the example, the price is shifted 2 columns to the right. Let's select any cell with the formula and see that instead of $G$2:$H$12 now $I$2:$J$14 .
Now let's figure out how to work with the VLOOKUP function in Excel and with drop-down lists. First you need to make a dropdown list. Select the cell, open "Data" at the top and click on the button "Data checking".
In the window that opens "Data type" will be "List", below we indicate the source area - these are the names of fruits, that is, the column that is in both the first and second tables. Press "OK".
I select F2 and insert the VLOOKUP function. The first argument is the made list (F1 ).
The second is a supplier table with specified prices. Remember that here the left column must match the data that makes up the drop-down list.
It turned out something like a search: we select a fruit and VLOOKUP finds its price in the price list.
If you had the same prices, and then the suppliers gave a new list, then you need to somehow see what has changed. Doing this manually takes a long time, but with the help of the function in question, everything can be done very quickly. You will need to add one column and transfer new values to it, and then just compare the data.
Click on any cell in column D and insert one new one.
I called it New Price - here there will be new prices, and in the column on the left, the old ones are indicated. I have a new table on a different sheet so that it becomes clear to you how to use VLOOKUP if the data is located on different sheets. In the added column, select the first empty cell.
We insert a function and specify the arguments. First, what we are looking for is an apple in the example (A2). To select a range from a new price list, place the cursor in the "Table" field and go to the desired sheet, I have "Sheet1".
We select the necessary columns and rows with the mouse, without headings.
Then we make absolute cell references: "Sheet1!$A$2:$B$12". Select the line and press F4 to add a dollar sign to the cell addresses. Specify the column (2) and write "FALSE".
At the end, click the "OK" button.
Now two columns with the new and old price are located side by side and you can make either a visual comparison, or by applying certain formulas, or conditional formatting.
