The oral part of the English language. Learning to describe a picture (USE, OGE). From the experience of private practice

IN the last article in the series "USE 2016 How to prepare for speaking" Let's look at task 4.

Task 4represents comparison monologue two photographs or pictures.

To successfully complete this task, you need to adhere to the proposed plan:

  • give a brief description of the photos (what is happening in the picture, the scene)
  • say what these photos have in common (what theme unites them)
  • tell me how these pictures are different
  • express your preference in one of the photos
  • explain why you are close to the topic of the selected photo

Preparation time - 1.5 minutes

The duration of your response — 2 minutes

Maximum score - 7 points

Next Tips help you compose a logical description of photos or pictures:

When describing rooms or houses use the right-to-left or left-to-right technique (so called "walking tour of the house");

- when describing photographs or paintings use the reception from left to right, right to left, from the edges to the center, from the foreground to the back;

- when describing human use the top-down or bottom-up approach.

Task4 Variant 1

  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • explain why

Start your answer with opening phrase:

I would like to compare and contrast these two photos. / I would like to point out right at the beginning that there are different ways of going in for sports. And these two photos prove that.

I should say that the common theme of these pictures is doing sports. / I think the common thing here is ... / I believe that the theme which relates these photos is ... / One thing that picture 1 and picture 2 have in common is...

sample answer:

Let me start with the first picture which shows a little girl who is in the gym at the moment. The girl is going to play table tennis because she is carrying a red tennis racket in her hand. As we can see the gym is well equipped. In the middle of the gym there is a big blue table with a tennis net on it. In the background of the picture you can see some sports facilities such as flying rings, a gymstick, a rope, a hoop and others. All in all, it seems to me that the gym is quite large and light.

As for the second picture it shows a young man running in the field. It might be summer time because he is wearing a green t-shirt, black shorts and white sports shoes. Also, he is wearing a watch on his wrist for timing his heats. Though the sky is blue and the weather is warm and sunny you can see two mountain peaks covered with snow in the background of the picture.

As I"ve already mentioned both pictures are connected with doing sports. You can't but agree with me that both - a girl and a young man look fit and healthy.

Obviously, we can see certain (some) differences. The first picture shows a little girl whose hobby is playing tennis. On contrary, the man in the second picture is a professional sportsman as he looks very sporty and strong. besides, the first picture shows the girl who is playing tennis indoors while the young man is going in for sports in the open air.moreover,a team game and you need at least one more person to play it with. As to the track-and-field athletics, you can do it on your own.

As for me I "d prefer to take up to table tennis because I am fond of doing sports with my best friends or relatives. Secondly, this game develops quick thinking and reaction. finally, you can do it outdoors as well as indoors and bad weather cannot spoil the pleasure.

in conclusion, I would like to say that both pictures make me think that sport is a great way to spend your free time and, of course, it is useful for your health.

That "s all I wanted to say. Thank you for listening. / That" s where I "d like to end. (final sentence)

There were 25 phrases in total. It is necessary to build your answer in such a way as to meet the time allotted for the answer (2 minutes). Recommended number of phrases: 12 -15 , but not less. Remember that the opening and closing phrases are judged by experts; their absence will negatively affect your score.

Task 4 Variant 2

Study the photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
  • say which kind of the activities presented in the pictures you"d prefer
  • explain why

Start your answer with opening phrase:

I would like to point out right at the beginning that I will compare and contrast these pictures.

I believe that the theme which relates these photos is a life style of the youth.

Let me start with the first picture that shows a group of young people who are at work now. The man on the right and a young woman in a black suit are sitting around the table while the woman in a beautiful white suit is standing at the moment. Unfortunately, I can't see the face of their boss who is giving them some instructions. They are listening to him very attentively. It looks as if they are ready to make some notes because you can see pads (notebooks) in front of them.

As for the second picture I have the impression that the group of young people is enjoying their free time sitting on the grass. I can only guess that they might be co-students at the international language school because you can see them carrying their workbooks. They are probably having their break time now. As the weather is warm and sunny, they decided to spend it in the school yard. They all are smiling and look very happy so I think they did their test successfully.

I should say that the only similarity between picture 1 and picture 2 is that they depict young people who are practically of the same age.

One of the main differences between pictures is that in the left picture you can see two men and two women (four people) working whereas in the right picture there are two girls and a boy who are having a rest in the open air. The most obvious difference for me between these two pictures is people's clothes. For example, people in the first picture are wearing suits according to the dress code of their firm, while people in the right picture are wearing casual clothes such as jeans, jumpers and trainers.

As for me, I would rather go to a language school because my dream is to speak English fluently. Moreover, it would be interesting to make some new friends from abroad.

To sum it up, I would like to say that to work or to study together with smart and intelligent people is always a great pleasure.

(end phrase)

Task 4 Variant 3

Study the photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • say which kind of the activities presented in the pictures you"d prefer
  • explain why

Start your answer with opening phrase:

I would like to compare and contrast these two photos.

I think the common thing here is classical music.

Let me start with the first picture which shows a young girl who is performing on the stage at the moment. She is wearing a white blouse and a dark skirt. She is playing the grand piano together with a string orchestra. there is a beautiful organ . In the foreground of the picture you can see a lot of spectators. That's why I can say that music is not just her hobby but she is involved in it very seriously.

As for the second picture it also shows a young girl playing the piano. She looks very elegant in her black velvet dress. As you can see she is wearing glasses. In the background of the picture you can see a portrait of a famous composer. Unfortunately I'm not very good at classical music that's why I don't know his name. Under the portrait there is a basket of lovely roses, so I can only guess that it might be the anniversary of the composer.

As I have already mentioned the theme which relates both pictures is classical music . The most obvious similaritiesbetween photo 1 and photo 2 is the musical instrument the girls are playing and it is a piano. It is evident that the girls are practically of the same age. in my mind, they might be very talented.

You can't but agree with methatthe main difference between picture 1 and picture 2 is that the girl in the first picture is performing in a big concert hall whereas the girl in the second picture is playing the piano in a small room.(It is probably the classroom in a local Art School.) besides, the girls are wearing different items of clothes. Last but not least, in the first picture you can see a lot of audience while in the second picture we cannot see any listeners.

As for me, I would rather go to a big concert hall because I've always wanted to listen to the organ.

Summarizing, I may say that it is great to have a good ear for music and play a musical instrument because music always makes your life brighter. (23)

That's where I'd like to end.(end phrase)

I suggest for independent work to complete the task from the textbook Solutions publishing houses Oxford University Press. Be sure to do the preliminary exercises; they will help you consolidate the necessary vocabulary. Under the pictures you will find questions, by answering which you will receive not only an external description of the picture, but also learn how to express your assumptions, evaluate the current event, and draw logical conclusions. To perform most efficiently task 4 from the section Speaking at the USE 2015 in English, use the following expressions:

Firstly- Firstly

Secondly- Secondly

Thirdly- Thirdly

moreover - moreover

It seams to me / It looks like / It might be - I think/should be

I can only guessI can guess

If I "m not mistaken - If I'm not mistaken...

Are you taking the exam in English? So, you need to master such a difficult section as speaking, or the oral part. These are tasks C3, C4, C5 and C6 in the USE version. Most of the mistakes graduates make in these tasks.

We have prepared for you two real USE tests in English and samples of these tests. Each of them has 4 tasks. On this page - Test 1

Task C3 - reading.

HTML5 audio not supported

Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

Many lands that had once been swamps were drained or filled in. There are different reasons why people drained swamplands. Some were drained to fight diseases caused by insects that lived in them. Because swamps were considered unpleasant places in which to live and harmful to health, many people thought that unless they were drained the land was worthless.

Other swamps were drained to make new land. As the population grew and more land was needed, people drained swamps or filled them to make room for more farms and factories, more roads and airports.

Few people thought that it might be harmful to get rid of swamps. As swamps disappeared, other things happened. There were both more floods and more droughts than before. There were also more fires, for swamps had acted as firebreaks. Hunters noticed that there was less wild game. Wild life that once lived in the swamps was dying out, because it had no place to live.

Task C4 - make up questions.

Task 2. Study the advertisement.
You are going to visit Japan this summer and you’d like to have more information about the flights to Japan. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask five questions to find out the following:

1) departure dates
2) travel time
3) return ticket price
4) discounts for students
5) buying the ticket online
You have 20 seconds to ask each question.

Task execution example:
1. What are the days of departures? (What are departure dates?)
2. How long will it take to travel?
3. How much does the return ticket cost? (What is the price of the return ticket?,
How much is the return ticket?
4. Do you offer any discounts for students? (Are there any discounts for students available?)
5. Is it possible to book the ticket online?

Task C5 - description of one picture.

Task 3. Imagine that you are showing pictures of your pets to your friend. Choose one photo to present to your friend. You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes. You have to talk continuously. In your talk remember to speak about:
when you took the photo
what/who is in the photo
what is happening
Why did you take the photo
Why did you decide to show the picture to your friend
Don’t forget to start with “I have chosen photo number….”

An example of a completed task C5:

I have chosen photo number 1.
To begin with, people keep pets for different reasons. They make our lives more exciting and become the members of our family. They can also be our closest friends forever.

I took this photo last summer in our country house. We have got several pets and this dog is among them. All our pets are friendly and cute creatures.
Let me tell you a few words about this photo. In the background you can see a wonderful Russian landscape. In the foreground there is a wonderful lawn framed with lovely birches and bushes. In the center you can see my elder sister Sveta and our dog Snowflake. We called him so because he is as white and fluffy as snow.
The weather is fine, sunny and warm. Snowflake likes to go for a walk very much. In the photo Sveta is telling him something to keep him calm. You can't see me as I am taking the photo.
Taking this photo I wanted to start a collection of our pets' pictures and to display it on the wall in our living room. Besides, the photos will always remind us of our pets.
I decided to show this picture to you because you told me a lot about your dog. Now it's my turn to give you the first impression of my pet. Isn't he friendly and cute?
I believe when you come to our place , Snowflake will accept you as his best friend.
That is all I wanted to tell you about this photo.

Task C6 - comparison and comparison of two photographs.

Task 4. Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:
give a brief description (action, location)
say what the pictures have in common
say in what way the pictures are different
say which kind of life you'd prefer
explain why

You will speak for no more than 2 minutes. You have to talk continuously.

In our modern world some jobs are very important for our society.
Here are two pictures to compare and contrast on the topic. This is a photo of a man doing his job outside and that is a photo of a policeman standing on the side of the road.
These two pictures show jobs and this is the first similarity. The people in both pictures are wearing uniforms , and that is also what these pictures have in common. The weather is rather warm.
However, pictures are somehow different. The main difference is that in picture one we can see a worker , while in picture two there is a traffic policeman. Also, their actions are different: the worker is paving a sidewalk and the policeman is on duty watching the traffic on the road.
As far as I am concerned, the job of a traffic policeman (cop) is more important for the society because people of this profession are responsible for our safety and order on the roads. Besides, they control all drivers to keep and obey traffic rules. It is very important for all drivers and passengers' lives.
I've come to the end of my speaking. Thank you for listening.

Speaking at the exam - general information

The oral part of the exam consists of several different tasks - tasks 41 - 44.

  • Task 41. Reading text aloud
  • Task 42. Conditional dialogue-questioning
  • Task 43. Connected thematic monologue statement using the main communicative types of speech (description, narration, reasoning)
  • Task 44. A connected thematic monologue statement - the transfer of the main content of what was seen with the expression of one's attitude, assessment, argumentation (comparison of two photographs)

The maximum number of points that you can score for the oral part in English on the exam is 20 points.

1 point for reading, 5 points for dialogue and 7 points for each oral statement.

Difficulty levels tasks in the oral part: basic for the first three and high for the last.

General lead time oral part of the work - 15 min.

Tips for preparing for each of the oral assignments for the exam.

The oral part of the exam has a computerized form, so you can’t influence the time in any way. You will be given exactly as much as is determined by the program limit, therefore, even if you are ready to talk a lot and for a long time, you will have to speak exclusively on the merits. During the answer, you will also not have the opportunity to make written notes - the speech should be spontaneous.

Necessarily At the end of the exam, listen to your answer in full. If, for some technical reason, all or part of the answer was not recorded, you can retake the oral part of the exam.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the interface of the program for the oral part of the exam. You can do it here - http://injaz.ege.edu.ru/. Practice, learn to control the time of oral speech.

TASK 41 - READING THE TEXT ALOUD

You will have 1.5 minutes to prepare and exactly the same amount to read the texts. Don't worry, this time will be enough for you. Below in the article are exemplary texts for reading on the oral part of the exam.

Try to pronounce all words correctly, and be sure to observe intonation. While preparing, look for question marks or exclamation marks in the text. Pause with commas and periods.

Emphasize important words that carry more meaning with intonation.

Don't worry if you make a mistake in pronunciation while reading. In order to get 1 point (maximum) for this task, you need to make no more than 5 phonetic errors, with no more than 2 gross ones. Gross errors are such errors that prevent the understanding of the word.

TASK 42 - CONDITIONAL DIALOGUE QUESTION

In this task, you will need to respond to what is happening, ask questions. Yes Yes! It is important to be able to ask questions here. So be sure to repeat all types of questions, and especially special questions, because basically, you will be asking them. You will need to ask 5 questions, each of which will be worth 1 point. In order to get this score, you need to compose the question grammatically correctly.

Do not try to make the question rich in lexical terms - this will not be additionally appreciated. Do not be smart - do everything simply and confidently. It is perfectly acceptable to use the same type of questions.

Remember that the person who checks your questions will check the last one. Therefore, if you made a mistake, you can ask the question again, correcting it.

TASK 3 - THEMATIC MONOLOGICAL STATEMENT

You will need to choose one of three personal photographs and describe it according to the proposed plan. 1.5 minutes are given for preparation, the answer should consist of 12 - 15 sentences and take no more than 2 minutes.

What is important to get the maximum score?

  • 1 - solve a communicative task (that is, tell what is required in the plan). If you do not solve the communicative task, then no matter how well you speak, you will still get 0 points for this USE task.
  • 2 - use at least 12 phrases (3 points are given for this)
  • 3 - be sure to make an introduction and conclusion (2 points)
  • 4 - make a minimum of mistakes (2 points)

Try to strictly follow the plan proposed to you.

The answer should begin with the phrase I've chosen photo number..., as it will be indicated in the assignment, but this phrase will not be considered introductory.

Examples of introductory phrases:

  • I'd like to show you a picture from my photo album.
  • Would you like to have a look at this picture?

Closing phrase examples:

  • I hope you liked my picture.
  • I guess that's all I can tell you about this photo.

To some extent, you can prepare at home. Think about how to tell where and when the picture was taken, why you decided to take the picture, why you decided to show this particular photo.

In a story about a photograph, you cannot do without the use of expressions thereis /thereare- so be sure to repeat this rule.

Also repeat the Present Continuous time, you can hardly do without using it.

Use phrases:

  • the picture,
  • in the background
  • in the foreground,
  • to the left/right,
  • in the center
  • to take a picture

BE SURE TO USE PICTURE SYNONYMS (SHOT, PHOTO, PHOTOGRAPH).

TASK 4 - THEMATIC MONOLOGICAL STATEMENT

When completing this task, you will need to compare 2 photographs (pictures) according to the proposed plan. The pictures will show 2 ways of the same. You will have 1.5 minutes to prepare and 2 minutes to answer.

The task is evaluated in the same way as the previous one:

  • Using at least 12 phrases - 3 points
  • There is an introduction and conclusion - 2 points
  • Few or no errors - 2 points

If the communicative task is not solved (you did not compare the pictures according to the plan), then you get 0 points.

Examples of introductory phrases.

  • I'd like to compare and contrast these two pictures for you.
  • Let me talk about these two pictures for you., etc.

Closing phrase examples:

  • That's all I wanted to tell you about these two pictures.
  • I hope I've managed to complete the task., etc.

You may also need the following clichés:

  • As for the similarities between the two pictures, ...
  • However, there are some differences between these pictures.,
  • I'd personally prefer shopping online, etc.

Examples of tasks for the oral part of the exam in English.

Examples of texts for reading - TASK 41.

Geography is the study of the Earth and its features, its inhabitants, and its phenomena. The word geography comes from Greek. It means “to write and draw about the Earth”. Geography studies continents, seas, rivers and mountains. It deals with all the people and animals that live on the Earth. It is interested in the things that happen on the Earth like tides, winds, and earthquakes. A person who is an expert in geography is a geographer. A geographer tries to understand the world and the things that are in it, how they started and how they have changed. Geographers need to know a lot about maps because maps are very important for understanding geography.

Geography is divided into two main parts called physical geography and human geography. Physical geography studies the natural environment and human geography studies the human environment. Human geography studies include things such as the population in a country, a country’s economy and so on.

Astronomy is the study of the universe and everything in it. This includes stars, planets and galaxies as well as other things. The word astronomy comes from two Greek words. The first means star and the second means slaw. A person who studies astronomy is called an astronomer.

Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences. Ancient people used the positions of the stars to navigate, and to find when was the best time to plant crops. Astronomy is very similar to astrophysics. Since the 20th century there have been two main types of astronomy, observational and theoretical astronomy. Observational astronomy uses telescopes and cameras to look at stars, galaxies and other astronomical objects. Theoretical astronomy uses maths and computer models to predict what should happen. The two often work together, the theoretical predicts what should happen and the observational shows whether the prediction works

Examples of tasks for constructing a conditional questioning dialogue - TASK 42.

Example 1. Study the advertisement.

You are considering visiting the exhibition and now you'd like to get more information. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask five direct questions to find out about the following:

  • opening hours
  • number of exhibits
  • if one can take photos
  • admission fee
  • group discounts

Example 2

You are considering visiting the museum and now you'd like to get more information. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask five direct questions to find out about the following:

  • location
  • opening hours
  • transportation
  • guided tours
  • if a visitor can have lunch there

You have 20 seconds to ask each question.

An example of tasks for compiling a monologue statement is TASK 43.

These are photos from your photo album. Choose one photo to describe to your friend.

You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12-15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

  • where and when the photo was taken
  • what/who is in the photo
  • what is happening
  • why do you keep the photo
  • why did you decide to show the picture to your friend

You have to talk continuously, starting with:

“I've chosen photo number ... “.

An example of tasks for compiling a monologue statement is TASK 44.

Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • say which of the professions presented in the pictures you'd prefer
  • explain why

You will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12-15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

Many of the graduates who take the 11th grade USE in English refuse to take the oral part of this exam. This happens because they are afraid of not being able to handle it. Let's not hide the fact that even now in many schools in Russia, not all English teachers can prepare students for the exam. But this is not a reason to get upset and give up, because every motivated student is able to pass the exam himself for the maximum score.

To prepare for the written part, you can solve examples from training reference books, learn grammar rules, read texts, etc. And what about the oral part? What is the oral part of the exam? How does it go? And the main question: how to prepare? Let's sort it out in order.

Conducting an exam.

The oral and written parts of the exam in English are taken on different days. In 2019, the delivery of the oral part will take place before the written one: oral on June 13, and written on June 18. The formal delivery time is 15 minutes, i.е. you will have 15 minutes to complete the tasks and fill out the registration form.

The organization of the exam is the same as the OGE exam. There are waiting audiences and there are surrender audiences. Initially, graduates are assigned to waiting audiences. There they are instructed, and then wait for their turn in the exam room. The waiting time depends on the number of equipped classrooms for passing the exam and on the number of examinees. Exam classes are equipped with computers and a special headset (headphones and microphone). After entering the classroom, you sit down at the computer, put on your headphones and fill out the registration form according to the number of your option, then complete the tasks.

Exam structure.

In the oral part of the exam in English, there are 4 tasks: reading the text, writing questions, a monologue description of the picture and comparing 2 photos. The first task is considered a basic level of difficulty, the second is an advanced level, but the third and fourth are a high level.

How many points can be scored for the oral part?

The English exam has a very interesting scoring system. It is unlike any other assessment system for other USE subjects. Why? The fact is that the primary score coincides with the secondary.

The entire English language exam is divided into 5 blocks: listening, reading, grammar, writing and speaking. And the maximum score for the successful completion of each block is 20. Accordingly, the maximum score for the successful completion of the oral part in English is 20 points. You will get 1 point for reading the text, 5 points for making questions, and 7 points for the monologue and comparison.

What to expect from the first task?

The first task that the student will face will be reading the text. The text will not be very large, approximately 150 words.

Reading the text is aimed at identifying the student's correct pronunciation and the absence of defects in speech. The better the examinee reads the text, the more chances he has to earn a point.

Common mistakes in this task are: incorrect pronunciation of words (most often numerals and geographical names), setting the wrong stress in words and distorted intonation.

To prepare for the first task, the graduate must learn the rules of reading, pronunciation and know the exceptions.

What mistakes are made in the second task?

In the second task, eleventh-graders are required to know how to write direct questions.

There is a situation in which the examinee is offered to immerse himself (for example: you came to a dance club or were going to go on an excursion). And to get complete information, the graduate needs to ask questions. After formulating the task, below, the topics on which you need to ask a question will be presented (for example: price, opening hours, location ...).

Common mistakes in this task are: composing questions that do not fit the stated topic, deviation from the plan of questions, grammatical errors, replacing questions with requests, using the pronoun It in the first question instead of designating the subject. For a complete understanding of the issue, in the first question you should mention the subject of your clarification. Also errors are the wrong word order, the omission of auxiliary verbs and the inconsistency of the subject and predicate.

How to prepare for the third task?

A smaller number of students cope with the third task, since it requires more preparation than the first and second ones. But, anyway, it is doable and if you understand it, then it may seem easy to someone.

There are three photographs that are allegedly kept in the graduate's album. Of these pictures, the student needs to choose only one and describe it, imagining that he is showing it to his friend. You need to describe the photo according to the plan that is presented in the assignment. The points of this plan include: where and when the photo was taken, who / what is shown on it, what is happening in the photo (holiday, walk, trip, etc.), the reason for storing this picture in an album and why the student decided to show the picture to a friend .

Common mistakes in this task are: a description of three pictures instead of one, a violation of the points of the plan for describing the picture, the absence of an appeal to the interlocutor (to a friend), the absence of introductory and final phrases, incorrect use of introductory structures, speech and grammatical errors.

Task 4: hard or easy?

It is believed that task 4 is the most difficult task of the oral part, as many experts and unprepared students say, and someone is ready to shout that it is generally impossible. But we are ready to argue with it. If the graduate knows the algorithm for preparing and completing this task, he will not have any difficulties.

The task is a comparison of two photographs / pictures. Given 2 pictures, a plan to follow for comparison.

As a rule, the contrast is immediately visible: city - village, vacation - work, paper book - e-book. But there are more difficult options: playing sports in the gym and in the fresh air, maintaining a clean environment with volunteers and family…

Common mistakes in completing this task are: describing pictures instead of comparing them, primitive comparison, as well as many mistakes made in task No. 3.

The most important skill for the successful completion of all tasks of the oral part is the skill of accurately allocating time to complete all tasks.

As you can see, the oral part of the English language exam is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. The main thing is to prepare properly and not lose motivation.
