Surely, each of us has old, but practical and functional furniture in our home, with which you have many pleasant memories. But, unfortunately, after the next renovation it simply does not fit into the design of the room, and I really don’t want to throw it away. The solution to this issue is very simple. In this article we will tell you how to return a sophisticated look to your favorite piece of furniture and give it a unique design by using DIY decoupage of stools.

What is decoupage?

At the moment, decoupage is in great demand among designers. With its help it is very easy to create a decorative element for any stylistic design of the room.

Important! The decoupage technique has been known since the 17th century and involves a process through which, in a short time and at low financial cost, it becomes possible to decorate a surface based on the style of the room.

As in the recent past, fabric, paper or other materials are used for decoration. Very often, designers use this type of handicraft for rooms in the Provence, Vintage, and Viennese styles. Furniture made in one of them, in a store or individually made, has a very high cost, so the decoupage style is an excellent opportunity to show your design abilities, imagination and give old things a new life.

Required Tools

To carry out quick and, most importantly, high-quality finishing of furniture, you should take care in advance about the tools necessary to perform decoupage.

You will need:

  • Sandpaper (fine and coarse);
  • Wood putty or one corresponding to the material of the product;
  • Brush (narrow and wide);
  • Acrylic paints;
  • PVA glue;

Decoupage furniture at home

Three-layer napkins are most often used for work. They are quite easy to apply to any type of surface, and a variety of patterns and colors will help give the necessary style to the furniture.

Decoupage the surface of the stool with napkins:

  • Clean the surface of any old paint, varnish or other coating.
  • Sand the product with coarse sandpaper.
  • Fill dents and cracks on the stool with putty.
  • Apply acrylic paint to the chair.

Important! When choosing a shade for furniture, give preference to paint colors that are not too dark.

  • Cut out suitable elements from the prepared napkins for decoupage.

Important! You can purchase them in a specialized store, art shops or order via the Internet.

  • Separate the top bright layer of the napkin from the next two.
  • Apply PVA glue to the reverse side of the pattern and glue it to the surface of the stool.
  • Leave the product until completely dry.
  • Finally, coat the stool with clear varnish.

Important! The applied ornament or design can be additionally outlined with paint, and the surface coated with craquelure varnish.

Decoupage with photo paper

The decoration technique is quite simple, however, during the work process, special care and precision should be observed at all stages. On average, finishing can take several hours; the only thing is that you need to decide on the style and select the appropriate pattern.

You can decoupage a stool with your own hands using available materials. For example, as an alternative to three-layer napkins, you can use photo paper; for this you need to find a suitable image on the Internet and print it on a printer.

Important! To get a high-quality and clear image, it is better to print it on a laser printer.

Sequence of work:

  1. As in the previous version, prepare the surface of the chair, remove the old coating, and sand it with sandpaper.
  2. Treat the furniture with several layers of primer.
  3. Using acrylic paints, create the main background of the stool.
  4. Carefully separate the prepared images from the main sheet.
  5. Apply PVA glue to the back side and glue it to the desired area of the tabletop.
  6. Smooth out any unevenness and formed air bubbles using a roller or brush.
  7. Finally, coat the chair with clear varnish.

Do-it-yourself decoupage of stools using photo paper will allow you to update the look of your furniture in a variety of styles. On the Internet you can easily find original images and turn your most unusual ideas into reality.

Decoupage stool in vintage style

Furniture decorated in vintage style is perfect for a dining room, kitchen or veranda of a summer cottage. In this case, old chairs and stools are exactly the items that will organically fit into the overall interior. The best option for finishing is three-layer napkins with neat patterns depicted. The presence of cracks and chips is necessary to convey the vintage style of furniture, and using the decoupage method your chair will look more stylized.

Sequence of work:

  • Preparation of the surface of the product includes priming and puttying of overly uneven surfaces and deep chips.
  • Prepare a picture in advance, take into account the color scheme of the room, the general style of the room in which the furniture will be located.

Important! For a harmonious combination of all interior items, decoupage can be made into wallpaper that covers the walls in the room.

  • Next, do-it-yourself decoupage of the stool is carried out in the same sequence as we described earlier.

Important! Pay attention to the thickness of the decoupage paper. A sheet that is too thick must be delaminated, otherwise the design on the surface will look sloppy, which will ruin the entire result of your work. If the pattern is too thick, you can sand it a little and then cover it with a layer of varnish.

Decoupage stools in Provence style

Do you want to know how to decoupage stools in Provence style? If you decorate a room in this style, decoupage of a stool or several pieces of furniture will harmoniously emphasize the style of the room.

In order to properly decorate the room, follow some recommendations:

  • Choose the main background for the furniture - it should not differ too much from the color scheme of the walls or the main decorative elements.
  • Print on photo paper or purchase three-ply napkins with a suitable pattern.

Important! When decorating a room in Provence style, use images of natural motifs and simple patterns.

  • In the room where the stairs are installed, the stool can be decoupaged in the appropriate shade - this combination will perfectly complement the interior.
  • Provence style combines simplicity and comfort, so you should not choose colorful colors and intricate images.

Important! Decorate your furniture in light and gentle colors; decoupage is best done with minimalist images; as a result, you will get an airy and light interior.

The decor of chairs is especially relevant in cases where the appearance of the furniture leaves much to be desired.

But why do people save old chairs? Really, so as not to buy new ones?

Many of those who sit on old stools and chairs, but managed to acquire new ones, note that the quality and reliability of old furniture is much better.

And why throw away something that is still ready to serve faithfully.

Of course, you can coat the chair with regular varnish, but this will not significantly improve its appearance. You can use one of the techniques for decorating surfaces, which we will consider.

Chair decor using decoupage technique

Decoupage itself is versatile. It is easy to bring into reality, and it is used almost everywhere: in creating crafts, restoring furniture, decorating surfaces.

What you will need to decoupage a chair with your own hands:

  • transparent primer (if the chairs are wooden, use wood);
  • acrylic putty;
  • varnish coating;
  • paint of any color;
  • paint for decoupage of a chair (it is better to buy it at a craft store);
  • putty knife;
  • sandpaper;
  • glue (PVA recommended);
  • brushes;
  • sponge (for washing dishes, for example).

How to do decoupage on a chair

Decorating a chair using the decoupage technique should begin with cleaning the surface of all unnecessary things.

First, the old paint or varnish is removed using sandpaper, and then the surface of the chair is puttied.

The putty should be laid out in two as thin layers as possible, which should be applied very quickly. There is no point in scrubbing the surface several times to distribute the material - this will only leave streaks.

It is better if after each layer you leave the chair for half an hour so that it dries thoroughly.

On the one hand, it may seem that the surface has already dried, but in fact this is one of the stages of setting.

After you've waited for it to dry, take the primer and coat the chair with it.

That's it - we are ready to paint the decoupage chair. However, it is important to take into account one nuance: some chairs contain metal elements.

If they are not treated with an anti-corrosion agent, rust will appear.

Even if coated with paint, the color may change, appear yellowish and give unpleasant reflections in places where metal is placed that reacts with other chemical elements.

Decoupage furniture should begin when its surface is already painted and the paint is completely dry. However, if you don't need to paint the chair, you can skip many of the steps.

For example, there is no need to remove the old coating, if you are satisfied with it, or apply a primer. However, in this case, you need to thoroughly clean the surface by treating it with an alcohol composition, which will degrease and remove dirt.

If you decide to buy paper to decoupage a chair, everything is quite simple. You just need to cut out the images, think about how they will be placed, and then coat the working surface of the chair well with glue and apply the pictures.

However, we do not work the glue all at once, but in order, so that it does not have time to dry out or become thicker.

Before they are applied to the surface of the chair, designs for decoupage must be moistened in water and then blotted with a towel.

In this form, the images are glued one after another.

The last step is waiting for the glue to dry.

In the process of decorating chairs, you can improvise, creating gradients and stains, mixing different shades in some joints.

Now all that's left to do is apply three final coats of varnish to the chair, but it is important to remember that each of them will take a day to dry.

Decor using chair restoration

To decorate chairs with your own hands, if only the frame remains, you can use a wooden board, which will subsequently be nailed to the base, and attach a soft cushion in the shape of a chair to it on top.

A cushion for restoring a chair is quite simple to make:

  • a strong fabric is taken, measured according to the dimensions of the base, cut taking into account the turns;
  • you buy foam rubber, which can, and in some cases even needs to be used in several layers;
  • Using a construction stapler, we fasten the fabric on the back of the chair, thereby making the upholstery motionless.

To prevent the junction of the frame and the soft pillow from being visible, it can be decorated and secured with wide openwork stripes. The design and ideas include the use of different colors of fabrics for decorating chairs using the method of restoration, but mainly bright, colorful and patterned ones are used for home decoration.

You can decorate the back of the chair in the same way. If you decide to use a plain fabric, you can decorate the legs and frame of the chair. For this you will need paint and varnish.

The paint can, in principle, be anything, if you have already stocked up on acrylic varnish.

Also, if you make a chair with your own hands, you can design appropriate covers for it, which are not at all difficult to sew.

Decoupage - a second life for chairs

Every home has a wooden chair from the last century. Such pieces of furniture have always been distinguished by their quality and durability. After many years of use, the varnish has worn off, the surface of the legs has been scratched, and the colors have faded. You can paint it, varnish it or do something unusual.

Decoupage of an old chair will not only help restore it, but will also allow you to create a masterpiece that decorates the interior.

Materials and tools

Decoupage is realized through the use of designs applied to paper or fabric, glued and varnished.

To work you will need:

  1. Napkins, wallpaper, magazine or newspaper clippings, old vintage cards or posters, and other paper products, images from which will be used for decoration in different styles.
  2. Canvas or pieces of fabric for finishing.
  3. Scissors with sharp tips and a sharp utility knife.
  4. Sandpaper with grains of different sizes for sanding roughness, stripping the surface of the old coating, leveling transitions if the old varnish is partially preserved.
  5. A measuring tool will be required to measure the dimensions of the seat and backrest if decoupage is planned with a solid canvas of the entire surface of the product.
  6. Acrylic paints for painting the base and varnish, which will subsequently be used to cover the glued pattern.
  7. PVA glue, decoupage or wallpaper, depending on the finishing material used.
  8. Tassels of different widths. Narrow for working with more napkins or newspapers. Wide – for processing large areas and applying glue to thick paper and fabric.

Stages of chair decoupage

The process of decorating the surface of a chair consists of several main stages.

Surface preparation:

  • At the very beginning of work, the object is thoroughly cleaned of dirt and grease using detergents and wiped dry.
  • An obligatory step is sanding the uneven surfaces, removing as much as possible the old layer of paint or varnish.
  • If there are cracks, they are sealed with wood putty, acrylic putty or other means suitable for these purposes.
  • The final stage of surface preparation is painting.

After completing the preparatory work and the paint has dried, you can begin decoupage:

  1. Depending on the material used, drawn elements or pieces of fabric are cut out. The fabrics are prepared with an allowance of several centimeters.
  2. An adhesive mixture is applied to the area of decoration or restoration, allowed to dry slightly, then the element is also treated with glue and placed on the surface of the chair.
  3. You need to smooth out the drawing carefully, so as not to damage the paper, from the center to the edges using a soft brush.

DIY chair decoupage technique

Do-it-yourself restoration of wooden chairs using the decoupage technique allows you to create interior items in any style - from classic to ultra-modern.

Vintage technique

Vintage items are very popular. They represent a message from the past. This style implies complete authenticity to the chosen period of time. Vintage-style furniture should be emphasized by the effect of aging. Erased edges, faded paint, and small cracks in the coating are welcome.

Ideas for decorating chairs with a backrest should be implemented with the help of old postcards, posters and advertising brochures, images that repeat the decor of household items familiar to us from 50 years ago.

Several techniques are used for decorative aging:

  • To give the product a shabby look, it is first painted in darker colors. Then paraffin is applied to the corners and protrusions and painted with the main shade. After the coating has dried, use fine sandpaper to remove the paint in the areas treated with paraffin, and the dark tones come out.
  • A simpler method is to remove the top layer of wood with a wire brush and then varnish.
  • A wooden product looks impressive, the surface of which seems to have been eaten by bugs. This look is achieved by spattering dark paint.
  • The process of creating cracks is considered the most labor-intensive and expensive. A special gel or craquelure varnish is used, which, after drying, forms cracks on the surface.

In the original shabby chic style

Shabby chic is rooted in ancient English traditions, although products in this style began to be created relatively recently. The basic rule of shabby chic decoupage is complete matching of the shades of the base and the image.

If a pattern of pink flowers is used, then the base should have a light tint of this color. It is mandatory to erase the transitions from the decorative element to the base. It is best to coat such decor with varnish with a matte base.

Decoupage a chair with photo paper

To implement ideas that simply acrylic paints, napkins and wallpaper will not help, you can use images printed on photo paper. This way you can make a chair suitable for any interior. This is especially in demand in high-tech, art deco, and eco-tile.

The main feature is the need to separate the paper. A layer of varnish is applied to the printed surface and allowed to dry. Then the photo is lowered into the water, carefully lifted and the lowest layer is torn off. You can do without delamination, but as a result, the edges of the cut element may protrude above the base.

Provence style

Provence is permeated with floral motifs, soft shades of turquoise, lilac, and beige. This rustic style is expressed in abrasions, which are created by painting selected areas several shades darker than the top layer.
