Positioning

Motorola was until recently a part of Google, and therefore the first MOTO360 watch was perceived as a native, reference product of the search giant, at the level of Nexus devices. The perception of what Google is doing may differ, but it always guarantees interest. What's more, by announcing its watch back in March 2014, Motorola provided time for other companies to bring their variants to market. Inside Motorola, smartwatches as a project originated back in 2008, in the wake of the popularity of the RAZR, the company explored new niches. In 2011, MOTOACTV watches appeared on the market, which were competitors to Sony SmartWatch, and were distinguished by the same ideology.

That version of the watch can be safely called sports, this is how the company positioned it, this is not an accessory for every day, but an additional device for doing sports - which sharply reduced the potential niche for it. Sales of MOTOACTV proved to be a disaster, the watch quickly fell in value, and sold them outside the United States, although initially this accessory was positioned only for the home market.

In 2011, the AURA Watch project appeared (the name was different, but that was how they were called within the company), these watches were distinguished by the fact that they tried to make them designer and use round displays, like in MOTOAURA.

The filling of the watch was no different from that of the MOTOACTV. When Motorola Mobility came under the wing of Google, the idea came up to pull an already developed product with existing prototypes from under the cloth and show the capabilities of Android Wear on it. It was cheap and cheerful, quite Google-like.

And here we come to a very important question - for Google this product was important only as a demonstration of Android Wear, the company never worried about its sales. At that moment, a deal had already begun to sell Motorola to Lenovo. In Motorola itself, this product did not receive support from the management, since no one believed in it, it was perceived rather skeptically. As a result, the amount of advertising support is minimal, the volume of production is minimal, and the plans for 2015 are to release a more advanced version of this model. As an anecdote, I want to tell you that inside Motorola they didn’t even want to launch this product on a large scale, they didn’t see any sense in it. Under pressure from Google, it still happened, and then Motorola began to hastily add software. Only a couple of months after the start of sales, the software for these watches was rewritten for Android Wear, all crutches were removed - the result was an increase in the operating time, at least three times, as well as a smoother interface. But at the very beginning of sales, buyers did not receive a working, commercial product at all, but a raw product based on a rather problematic software (suffice it to remember that the clock did not last until evening and popular rumor had already remembered that they did not work much).

But let's move from the interior kitchen around the MOTO360 to who this product might be of interest to. Let's start with a description of the watch niche - today it is represented more by technology enthusiasts than by ordinary buyers. The volume of this niche is very small, for example, in 2013, according to the research company SmartWatch Group, 3.1 million watches were sold.

In 2014, this volume will at least double, but it remains a drop in the ocean, especially against the backdrop of sales of Swiss companies. I discussed a little about the watch market and the place of smartwatches on it in Spillikins, it is worth reading this text.

Before writing a review of the MOTO360, I asked the readers to whom the MOTO360 seems to be an interesting, externally beautiful watch and what kind of watch they are using now. An interesting pattern has emerged that cannot pretend to be absolutely accurate, but I think it is generally correct and coincides with my perception of this product. So, the design of these watches was highly appreciated by those who currently use GShock watches, followed by Citizen, Orient, that is, Japanese brands of both quartz and electronic watches. This is very important point, since all these brands in one way or another, back in the 80s, relied on technology, earned a reputation as pioneers in one area or another (charging from solar panels, protection from water and shock, etc.).

It turns out that in the watch market, a designer product similar to the MOTO360 can be a replacement for such devices. Potentially. But will it? The question is open, but for MOTO360 the answer can be given an exact one - the watch was no longer held due to the volume of production and the manufacturer's disbelief in it. But on the other hand, they can be purchased, and the small number of watches on the market even makes them more attractive, they are definitely not like everyone else's. Let's take a look at all the components of this watch and talk about their capabilities.

Design, dimensions, controls

You need to choose the color of the watch before buying it - black or gray. Both look good, the difference is solely in your taste. Most choose the classics - the black case.

Initially, these watches are sold with leather straps (in each color they match the color of the case). These are quality straps from Horween, very comfortable and not shaking hands. But in November in the United States will start selling watches with metal straps, they can be bought separately for $ 80, they look like this.

Considering that you can swim in the watch, the metal strap is a good help. The watch case is made of stainless steel (316L), the coating is excellent, they are not scratched. On the inside you can see the heart rate sensor, information about the characteristics of the watch goes in a circle. But the insert is made for an expensive watch, where the mechanism can be seen through the sapphire crystal. There is no sapphire in MOTO360, but there is a relatively soft, scratchable plastic.

The IP67 protection standard assumes that you can be in the watch at a depth of one meter for 30 minutes. Diving in them is not recommended, but you can take a shower or swim in the pool - this will not cause any problems. To make the case as protected from moisture as possible, the watch has been provided with wireless charging, the kit includes a desktop charger, where you can lower the watch and charge it. Comfortable? Undoubtedly. No need to fiddle with adapters, connect them to the watch - here I just put the watch on the base, took it off after an hour and a half.

If an ordinary watch has a winding crown, then in these there is a button in their place. After the announcement of the Apple Watch, many began to extol the fact that Apple first used this element in their watches, while others did not think of it. As you can see this statement is very far from the truth, in the same Motorola made it the first. The button allows you to activate the watch, but also when you raise your hand, the screen turns on. You can turn off the watch with the key, just hold it down for a long time.

The screen is round, but at the bottom there is a rectangular insert, in particular, there is a light sensor. A small eaten away part of the circle does not spoil the appearance of the watch at all, in any case, you quickly get used to it. Another thing is that Gorilla Glass 3, covering the screen, has beveled edges and a very mediocre oleophobic coating - fingerprints are constantly visible on the screen, it must be wiped. In smartwatches, this is a weak point, since in ordinary watches we do not touch the screen and the sapphire glass, moreover, is made curved, no handprints are visible. Here everything is exactly the opposite.

The screen remains readable in the sun, it can fade only in very bright sun. The diagonal of the screen is 1.56 inches, the resolution is 320x290 pixels. Considering that you only need to swipe the screens, no finger input is provided, this is quite enough.

Design is a purely individual thing, I share the opinion that this watch is the most pleasant of all smartwatches. But comparing them with mass models of conventional mechanics, I can not find anything particularly remarkable in them. They stand out in their niche (first of all, with a round dial), but in general they are nothing special. The image component of this or any other smart watch is zero today.

The built-in Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 320 mAh is quite capable of working for about 1.5-2 days in conjunction with a smartphone. This is not a problem, unlike the first versions of the software, which only gave half a day of work. Full charging time is about 1.5 hours. Many, but quite comparable with other similar devices.

Android Wear - variant from Motorola

This watch is built on the Android Wear platform from Google, and therefore does not have any unique differences from other brands, this is a first generation watch with all the ensuing consequences. True, someone may consider the presence of 6 different dial design options as the very unique feature - they look good.

In my Samsung Gear Live review, I dwelled on the concept of what Android Wear is today and why Google's prediction is not very convenient yet, a kind of mess of reminders.

But for someone, in the absence of a large number of reminders, such a product may become interesting, read the material from our reader about his experience of communicating with Android Wear.

Install Android Wear from the Play Market on your smartphone, you can also install Motorola Connect, but the second program does not make much sense - it duplicates the functions of Android Wear.

Voice control from Google works well, you can even answer SMS with a voice, but, for example, you cannot talk from this watch. You can reject or accept the call. Look at the pictures of the different warnings, programs and notifications on the watch, no special explanation is required here.

Impressions

The cost of these watches in the United States is $ 249 excluding taxes (at the current exchange rate, a little over 10,000 rubles). In Russia, resellers offer this watch for 15,000 rubles, you can find it a little cheaper, but the difference is insignificant. Those who are interested in watches usually note that they are as similar as possible to ordinary watches, and in this aspect, many manufacturers have tried to level this line. For example, in September, LG showed the next generation of their Android Wear watches (not to get confused, this is the second generation of watches from LG, but the first generation of the platform) - the LG G Watch R.

The cost of these watches in Europe is from 300 euros, in Russia they will appear approximately in November, in a very small edition and at a price of 15,000 rubles. It turns out that for a round clock on Android Wear, in any case, you have to fork out. The styling of the LG model is clearly inspired by the sporty GShock, with one but key difference - it's cheap plastic, they feel like something light on the hand, the weight is not felt at all. And given the cost, it just gets ridiculous. Choosing between LG G Watch R and MOTO360, I will vote for Motorola.

In reviews of watches on Android Wear, it has already become a tradition to say that the hardware turned out to be normal, but the platform itself is very confusing, it is impossible to work with it normally (to some extent, for some scenarios it is possible, see our reader's article). But for the mainstream market, Android Wear is a crude and obscure product. Moreover, for the amount that is asked for such a watch today, you can buy an entry-level Swiss watch, which, in terms of class and perception, will be a cut higher than all electronics that are bought for a year or two at most. This is a niche product, and no one believes in it yet, including the manufacturer itself - LG and Motorola have the same situation, they have produced the minimum devices to be presented, but nothing more. Here's a sad story about Android Wear smartwatches. We are waiting for the second version of the platform.

For the first time in the smartwatch market, Motorola announced itself as a rather powerful product - the Moto 360. They were first performed with a round display, excellent design, immediately showing a premium class, and Android Wear as an operating system. During the second generation of the Moto 360, the Moto 360 sport also came out, which was supposed to blur the line between fitness trackers and smartwatches. And they did it, however, only partially.

Appearance

The sports version of the Moto 360 is almost identical to the regular software. appearance... The thickness is only 0.1mm less, the diameter is 45mm. The weight of the watch is 54 grams - the watch is not felt on the wrist at all and does not cause any discomfort. The watch case protects the internal mechanisms from high temperatures, moisture and dust.

As befits all versions of sports watches, the strap is made of hypoallergenic rubber. It gives an excellent grip of the device with the hand, and does not rub the skin at the same time. The watch was invented specifically for sports activities, so there are special holes throughout the strap. With their help, ventilation and sweat removal is carried out. We don't have to talk about the build quality for a long time - Motorola is a great specialist in this, and all their electronics are assembled at the highest level.

But the Motorola moto 360 sport strap has its drawbacks. Visually, it seems that they are as if they are part of the body itself. There are no grooves or fasteners - if the strap deteriorates, you cannot change it yourself. The strap material is very attractive for dust and fine lint. The constant need to clean the strap is another disadvantage of the moto 360 2 sport smartwatch.

Functional

  • The Moto sport has an IP67 waterproof rating. That is, they will be able to adequately withstand a walk in the rain or a short exposure to moisture on them. But, do not go with them to the shower or pool.
  • The power button is in the direction of 2 o'clock. It is convenient to press and does not need to twist your hands. Unfortunately, the black bar at the bottom of the display has not disappeared anywhere, and continues to plague the eyes of fans of perfectionism.
  • Fitness watch tracks your pace, speed, time spent on training and gives you an estimated calorie consumption.
  • The most distinctive feature of the Motorola moto 360 v2 sport is the anylight function. Thanks to her, the display is well readable in any light. If it is dark, the interior light illuminates the image. If it's sunny outside, the hybrid screen adapts to the conditions and still provides excellent visibility.
  • And the main feature of the moto watch. They are widely recognized not because they are equipped with a good rubber strap, AnyLight technology and so on. The main trump card of the motorola is the built-in GPS-module, which until then was only in the SmartWatch 3 from Sony.

That is, if you have this watch, you do not have to carry your smartphone with you for a run. You press the start button, and the device starts automatically tracking the geolocation. Arriving home, it will remain to synchronize the watch with your smartphone. And already it will display statistics and the necessary data. The accuracy of GPS is quite high, which makes the motorcycle watch a rather serious competitor to other models.

The watch has a built-in heart rate sensor. Unfortunately, here, it was not possible to get high accuracy, as in the case of GPS. It allows you to determine only an approximate heart rate with a possible deviation of 5 beats per minute. For most people, these values do not matter, but for professional athletes, such errors are very noticeable.

For those who like to listen to music at workouts, there are also some goodies - through Google Play Music, you can download your favorite tracks and connect to headphones via Bluetooth. The functionality in this, of course, is rather weak, but there is always the opportunity to use third-party applications.

What's inside the gadget

The 300 mAh battery is practically no different from other devices. If we take the average values of the new model - about a day of work with all the functionality turned on. If you take into account the included GPS, then the time is truncated. With completely disconnected communications, the maximum operating time is about two days, but then the meaning in hours disappears almost completely.

This device is powered by Android Wear OS. Virtually no different from the "pure" version of android. The only exceptions are the more interesting and convenient dial design, and a few more proprietary buns from Motorola in the form of applications.

With the help of a smart watch, you can view notifications, reply to messages, take small notes - all the same that is inherent in any "smart" watch.

Let's summarize

Generally speaking, this device is quite a cross between a fitness tracker and a smartwatch. In either case, it lacks some features, but it also has some advantages.

Review of "smart" watches Moto 360: and seen smarter

In modern IT history, smartwatches were popularized by Sony Ericsson - the model was called LiveView. Then, of the most popular, there were Sony SmartWatch, but the real boom broke out later. Today, almost every major manufacturer has its own smartwatch, or even more than one model. Even Apple did not stand aside.

Of course, Motorola, as a former leader in mobile technology, couldn't miss the trend either. Moreover, the company, in collaboration with Google, decided to use the Moto 360 as an example to show how a real smartwatch should look for an Android user. Like the Nexus smartphones and tablets, the Moto 360 was supposed to become a kind of benchmark among all smart watches for the Android world. Become? Let's try to figure it out.

Equipment

The Moto 360 is delivered in a beautiful cylindrical box, somewhat reminiscent of a gift wrapping of chocolates.

A clock is immediately revealed under the cover.

Below them are the other components of the kit: a charger with a micro-USB cable, an adapter for wireless charging, instructions and other documents.

Since this is not an official "growth test" delivery (watches are not officially sold in Russia), the "plug" on the charger is American. But this is not a problem if you have any other charger with a micro-USB cable at home.

We connect the cable to the adapter, and put the watch in a special groove in the adapter. It looks like this:

Wireless charging is obviously made to be waterproof. And this solution is much better than the removal of contacts or a micro-USB slot with a plug on the watch itself, as is done by other manufacturers.

Appearance

As you know from the school geometry course, among geometric shapes with the same perimeter, a circle has the largest area. Apparently, this was what Motorola engineers were guided by, making the watch round. Someone will say that this is more familiar - after all, wristwatches have always been round.

However, initially they (wristwatches) became such for one and only reason - the hands in them move in a circle. Although, analogue clocks with a rectangular dial are also made, and very often.

But given that this is a smart watch, and in theory it is intended for reading information (text of notifications, for example), and not just viewing the position of the hands on the dial, it is the round display that turns out to be ill-suited for this purpose. Say what you want, but reading from rectangular screens is more convenient than from those with borders limited by arcs. In addition, the manufacturer, apparently, decided to enhance the effect of unusualness and equipped the edge of the display with a small bevel, which is enough for a rainbow to appear on a light background, caused by the refraction of light in the bends of the bevel.

Well, to complete the picture, the watch display is equipped with a "perfectionist's nightmare" - a black "cutout" in the correct circle.

The watch is controlled either using the button on the side (you can press and hold it), as well as using the touch screen.

Multi-touch for the touch screen is not provided, and it is not necessary. But swipe gestures, for example, are supported.

Connection

It is worth turning on the watch - it is already ready to pair with the device. Before pairing, you cannot do anything with them, they can only display this message:

We take any Android smartphone, turn on Bluetooth and download the Android Wear utility from the Google Play application store. We launch it - and the utility immediately detects our clock:

Enter the code - voila - pairing is complete.

Software

All watch controls are based on the Android Wear platform, which. Some settings can be made from the watch itself, some from the smartphone with which they are paired. Alas, it is not always clear what is where. For example, you can customize the look of a particular watch face on your smartphone, but you can select the desired face only on the watch.

By the way, there is no "creeping line" here. You can view the entire text of the notification only by going to it

In fact, the Moto 360 apps aren't very well adapted to the round screen.

Standard pedometer app. Part of the picture was left behind the scenes

But this is not the only problem - these applications are somehow still little functional. It's funny to say - among the standard "covers" for Moto 360 there is not one where the day of the week is displayed, and only one where the current date is displayed.

Quest "find a date here." While some are abandoning skeuomorphism, others are trying to recreate the "ordinary" hand clock

Weather. How much free space is lost ...

Another picture of the built-in pedometer app

It is not immediately possible to guess what it is. Hint: calendar.

“But wait,” an enlightened reader exclaims, “after all, this is Android! Surely you can install other applications and they will work fine with Moto 360? "

Of course. The Google Play Market has Android Wear apps capable of this feat - displaying the current date and day of the week and even the weather on the same screen as the watch. The only problem is that these applications are not adapted for a round display and look on the watch ... to put it mildly, unaesthetic.

Third party Weather Wear Watch Face app, also fully compatible with Android Wear

But, on the other hand, the Android Wear platform has an advantage over the same Sony Smart Watch. For example, it is not necessary to install a plugin for every application from which you want to see notifications. Almost all applications work like this - the correct icon is visible (plus ten points to recognition - where the notification came from), and even some text.

Notification from the standard Twitter client

Vkontakte client notification

But the text is in trouble again. Reading mail on Moto 360 is extremely problematic - all the fields (from whom, to whom, who in the copy, the subject line) merge into one large text, which (yes, we will talk about it again) fits well into the round screen. On the Sony Smart Watch 2, for example, this was done more gracefully.

By the way, you can reply to messages from Moto 360. True, only in voice, but that's right - what kind of touch input is there on such a tiny screen? Voice recognition quality is not bad, although Apple is subjectively slightly better.

Battery

Still, the main problem with Moto 360 smartwatches is autonomy. In the mode, in which the screen is not active all the time, they work a little more than a day. For a watch, this is an unacceptably short time. Perhaps, if there were no other examples, this could be considered normal, but there is an example of the same Sony Smart Watch 2 that works for 3-4 days. And even some Samsung watch models are capable of working for more than 2 days.

Total

Poor functionality, insufficient autonomy and high price - 15-16 thousand rubles - this is what the Moto 360 "smart watch" from Motorola is all about. In direct comparison with rivals from Sony, Samsung and LG, the Moto 360 falls short in almost every aspect, including price. And, perhaps, only the cute (but controversial) design corrects the situation. But, we repeat, for comfortable reading of information from the watch screen, this screen should still be rectangular.

The first generation of Moto 360 smartwatches was, among other things, the first round smartwatches (more precisely, almost round, but these are already trifles). This was their uniqueness and attractiveness. By the time the second generation entered the market, Moto had more than enough round competitors. But there is still some interest in the Moto device. Officially, the Moto 360 model of the second generation, like the first, will not be delivered to Ukraine, but this did not prevent the editorial board. gg get to know the device better. And at the same time - with Android Wear in its current form.

What's this?

Smart watch based on Android Wear OS. They come with a leather or metal strap, with a diagonal of 1.6 inches (resolution 360x330 pixels) or 1.37 inches (resolution 360x325 pixels). The price of the issue is from 10 thousand hryvnia (or 30 thousand rubles) for a smaller model with a leather strap to 15 thousand hryvnia (or 45 thousand rubles) for a large model with a metal strap. The model is delivered to Russia and Ukraine unofficially.

What's inside?

A middle-class processor (average at the time of its appearance and prosperity) Qualcomm MSM8926 Snapdragon 400 (Cortex-A7, 1.2 GHz), graphics Adreno 305. The amount of RAM - 512 MB, internal memory - 4 GB. Display resolution - 360x320 pixels. The watch has no performance issues. Plus or minus the same characteristics in other models. The battery capacity is 400 mAh.

What's in the box?

I don’t know if it’s right to call the round packaging of these smart watches a box, but still. This very box contains the watch itself, a charging dock, a charger and documents.

Moto 360 surrounded by its package

Smart watch on a pedestal - this is how it charges

However, whether they are charging, you can find out by this diode - if it is on, then charging is in progress. Doesn't go now.

How do they look?

We reviewed a 1.6-inch (or 42 mm) model with a leather strap. The box says that it is for men, but it seemed to me that the watch looked great on a woman's hand.

The Moto 360 has fairly thin bezels around the screen compared to some of the competition. Here, compare to the LG Watch Urban.

All in all, the Moto 360 looks pretty standard for a watch. Round, but the bottom of the screen is a little "cut off". This is where the light sensor is located.

There is only one control - a button for locking and unlocking the screen. The rest is by gestures.

On the back there is a heart rate monitor. It's a common thing for smartwatches.

The Moto 360s look sleek (as much as possible with their size). The dimensions are comparable to classic watches, so they do not interfere with life.

The strap is made of high-quality Horween leather (this is a fairly well-known American brand), which during the time that I used the watch (about two weeks) perfectly preserved its appearance. Which is understandable, it is understood that the watch should serve for a long time and endure all the vicissitudes of fate with dignity.

In general, there are no questions about the appearance and quality of materials. The watch does not collect scratches - the case and screen are durable.

How long do they work?

According to my observations, the maximum operating time corresponds to the one declared by the manufacturer - one and a half days. Sometimes the watch has to be charged once a day, or even more often. It all depends on the activity of using the screen, data synchronization and other little things.

Charging is wireless, outwardly somewhat similar to the charging from Gear S2. The full charge time is an hour and a half.

What can Android Wear do?

Android Wear watches don't differ much from each other. Unless each of their manufacturers has some kind of proprietary application for monitoring physical or heart activity (the latest Google Fit does not cope with it yet).

To start interacting with the watch, you need to install the app of the same name (Android Wear). Through it, connect, take screenshots, install programs, set up the prohibition of notifications (believe me, this is an important function, it will come in handy, so you need to immediately remember where to look for it), calendar notifications and enable / disable notifications on your smartphone when you have a watch on your hands.

The endless list of Android Wear apps in the store gives the false impression that the watch software can be supplemented, expanded and deepened with more options. In fact, this is not entirely true - if we discard aside the packs of third-party dials (including paid ones, with a price of about 40 hryvnia (a little more than 100 rubles), strange alarms that are incomprehensible in our latitudes of fitness programs (understandable under Android Wear so far which is not enough: there is Google Fit, software of watch developers, Endomondo, paid Runtastic, the rest is self-indulgence), there are dubious games, some of the usual services (Shazam, Skype, Todoist, Google Keep, weather from third-party developers, Tinder and other little things But there is no real abundance, and these programs in the watch are mainly used to come to terms with the fact that they exist on a smartphone and require attention.

So, in Google Keep, you can add only voice notes or notes related to drawing on the screen. Shazam prompts music (if you have time to start it), there are no questions. Todoist allows you to add voice memos, you can send all tasks for a specific project from your smartphone to this application on your watch (but you can't - all tasks for the day, for example), they can be marked as completed or rescheduled to other dates. With the help of third-party software, you can control the camera. But it's not that third-party developers have made Android Wear smartwatches more than what Google has done at the moment.

The main purpose of the device is to serve as a mouthpiece for Google Now and smartphone alerts. The watch could be a great help in the user's sports life if Google Fit were smarter. And so - yes, it really can pull up data on the distance traveled from the watch without additional activity from the user. Knows how to count, for example, squats, based on the movement of the user's body. But the service, native to Google, does not yet allow us to look at the dynamics of heart activity in a convenient form. It's just that there are heart rate measurements in the watch. And also - the watch by default, unlike a number of smart bracelets, does not monitor the quality of sleep, although they have all the tools for this. I mean that the main reason is autonomy, which will come to naught if you use the heart rate monitor constantly and at the same time have a screen.

The main thing in the user's relationship with the watch is to memorize all the control gestures at once. To the right - swipe the hint, see all the hints - pull up on the one that is displayed on the screen, remove the reminder - swipe down on the screen, if you do the same, but from the top edge of the dial, you can get quick access to the settings. Open the application menu - to the left. Behind the application menu is a menu with contacts. From it, you can send a message (dictate it with a voice, draw on the screen in the form of a smiley) or a ready-made template. Behind it - a voice search from Google and a large list of tips for it. Voice search is launched from the main desktop. He has enough various commands, even in Russian, for normal clock control. But I confess, I launched it only for test purposes and did not use it in everyday life. I have a big psychological barrier to talking with gadgets. In the same way, for quite a long time I could not accustom myself to talking on a headset in the city. It really looks like schizophrenia, until the society is ready for this behavior of its members, I will not use voice search.

Android Wear has the ability to send drawings, photos or emoticons to other watch owners (as far as I understand, a similar function is present in the Apple Watch) - Together. Configurable in the smartphone. An invitation to chat Together comes to the mail. Service even add itself to the "second screen". At first glance, Together seems strange. But in real life it's really nice to send and receive such messages, even from yourself. For all my disdain for all sentimental manifestations, this function seemed beautiful to the point of disgrace.

Smartphone notifications, on the other hand, seem like a cool idea only in theory. After the hand vibrates continuously from messages in all communication channels (especially if your friends like to send you messages of two or three words in batches) for the first half hour, you want to throw out the clock. It's easier than re-educating the interlocutors. But in fact, it is better to turn off any notifications, except for calls, mail and SMS, then the maximum balance between unobtrusiveness and benefit will be observed. Letters can be sent to the archive directly in the watch, marked as read, you can reply to them using voice control, emoticons or ready-made text templates. I didn't like the fact that each separate function has its own screen. In Tizen, these things are combined on one screen, so much more convenient. Moreover, the place allows.

At first (when I had not yet guessed to turn off notifications from Viber, for example), mail annoyed me no less than other events on the phone. But in the end, after a few moments when I was waiting for some important letters on the way to work or home, the watch on my wrist helped me out a lot. Because for every buzz, you didn't have to go into your pocket and check what came to your phone. It was enough to raise your hand.

By the way, did you notice that screenshots from the clock are rectangular? To be honest, throughout the entire time of using devices on Android Wear (and this is already about three weeks, and the practice continues), I did not leave the feeling that this interface was not ready for a circle. Yes, the round clock looks more interesting - it looks more like a clock, and it's unusual for a round gadget. But by and large, Android Wear has not yet done anything to ensure that the space on the display is used rationally. If you don't think so, go back to the review of the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch - where you can clearly see in the images of the interface that the space is used rationally and rationally. And this move with the control ring is just brilliant. It is sorely lacking in any round Android Wear watch when you have to flip through long sheets of installed apps or settings. By the way, in the menu with applications, the list begins with programs that have been used recently.

In the context of talking about the capabilities of Android Wear, it remains to mention the settings. You can break through to them through the application sheet or by swiping from top to bottom on the main desktop. There, in the "hot" mode, the "do not disturb" mode will appear and access to the display brightness, all settings will appear on the third screen. In the settings, you can control the display (change the font, brightness and dial), connections (for example, if you want to connect a headset), turn off / restart / reset the device / switch to the "airplane" mode. But the two most important options are the always-on screen and the wrist gesture (there are ON and OFF modes). You should immediately understand whether you need a permanent active screen (firstly, it blinds at night if you wave your hand in front of your nose, and secondly, it eats the battery mercilessly). But on the other hand, on the other hand, it always shows the time and some other notifications that you set up.

What's in them from Motorola?

The brand, the style, the materials, the second generation of living in circular design - it's obvious. Also, the watch has software from Motorola. It is downloadable from the Moto Connect and Moto Body app store.

Moto Connect is software designed to combine different Motorola devices into one universe. Including watches, smartphones, Moto Power Pack, etc. With the help of this application, you can customize the design of the interface so finely that there is a risk of drowning in the number of available options.

Moto Body is something more interesting. In this program, steps are recorded and the load on the heart is monitored (I still did not understand if the program measures heartbeat when it detects this mode, or the data appears on the basis of the accelerometer). Also in Moto Body there is a "Run" mode, the ability to set goals for the number of steps taken or calories burned. In addition, you can sync data with several fitness apps (including Google Fit). The program looks colorful and more user-friendly on the smartphone screen than the software from Google. It also gives out graphs where you can track the dynamics in in different ways... But in essence, Google Fit is the same plus or minus, and even a little more. And I want something more advanced.

What have I used with my Moto 360 smartwatch?

After the happy ending of the battle with unnecessary notifications, I finally became imbued with the presence of a smartwatch on my wrist. And notifications, a pedometer and a heart rate monitor are far from all useful that they have. Firstly, the device is convenient as an alarm clock. There is no "smart" alarm clock in it, but to be honest, I played enough of this miracle technology and after using it for a long time, I realized that I did not feel much difference in waking up to the wrong or correct phases of sleep (it is rather the time of day, the number of hours sleep and what you need to wake up for). But waking up with a light vibration on your hand with the convenient opportunity to postpone your nap for another 10 minutes is really pleasant.

The second thing is the timer and stopwatch that the smartwatch has. Recently, for the sake of interest, I decided to keep track of how much time is spent on certain things, and to study my habits. Smart watches are the ideal assistant in this matter.

The third is mail and calls on the road or when a smartphone is not at hand.

The fourth is music control on the road, but you still have to get used to this feature.

Fifth is Google Fit integration. Although I scold this service all the time, smart watches still give a more complete picture of physical activity, and besides, they allow you to swing abs or squat, not counting the number of times - they have a similar function (there is also running, push-ups, bicycle and other delights of life, but they did not interest me). In addition, although it is clumsy (through a long menu), the watch can measure the pulse in different states.

Sixth is the weather at arm's length.

Seventh - dials. There are really very beautiful ones, when I found something that fully suits my taste, I really appreciated their charm.

What disappointed me about smartwatches?

I could not enjoy the availability of Todoist or Google Keep - after all, I consider voice control a shame. I didn’t make friends with the sports orientation either for the usual reason - my favorite adidas micoach application doesn’t support anything other than a “native” watch and a “native” fitness bracelet. And I have a persistent dislike for other programs. I'm ready to use some of the features of S Health, but in general, I still have a feeling of emptiness where there could be a useful function. Motorola has tried to correct this omission, but it is still not the right thing to do. Yes, it's even sad that with automatic sleep monitoring, Android Wear smartwatches are worse than any bracelet. I forgot about many features of the watch, because I had to make my way to them through inconvenient navigation. For example, calls and messages. Plus, these features are still incomplete in Android Wear.

In the dry residue

Although during the use of smartwatches from different manufacturers I discovered several useful functions in them, in my opinion, this device with all its current capabilities is still an interesting thing, especially for those people who wear watches (here I do not wear, just in case). The proliferation of round (or nearly round) displays and the Android platform adapted for wearable devices have brought an important thing to the smartwatch market - diversity. Now smartwatches are produced by many manufacturers. Therefore, the user has the opportunity to choose something that suits his style or wallet perfectly. The Moto 360 is an accessory for those who prefer sleeker electronics. In spite of the fact that this model from Motorola has a design and some software, in everything except its appearance, the model is a typical representative of Android Wear devices. This means that it perfectly copes with the task of notifying the user about all important events, has a high level of voice search and works on a single battery charge for less than two days. If you are ready to endure the shortcomings of autonomy and you are well aware that the capabilities of this watch will be useful to you, then welcome to the store (Ukrainian-speaking users should take into account that there is no support for their language in the interface). If you also expect wearable electronics to be useful in sports endeavors, then Android Wear is not the best assistant here (the same Samsung Gear S2 or Sony SmartBand 2 do better with these tasks). In general, to remain happy with your purchase, first understand what you expect from the wearable accessory and check your sense of beauty.

4 reasons to buy Motorola Moto 360 (2nd generation):

  • elegant design, there are options for different straps and diagonals;
  • this is Motorola;
  • it is important for you not to miss calls, letters, messages, and in general always keep your finger on the pulse;
  • you are ready to accept that smartwatches in their current form are not as defiantly skillful as a smartphone, and wait until they become "smarter", especially since Android Wear has a very good chance of this.

3 reasons not to buy the Motorola Moto 360 (2nd generation):

  • you are not ready to charge the watch every day or two;
  • in fact you are looking for something more sporty;
  • price factor.

Women's version of the round smartwatch on Android Wear

On April 19, the official sales of the second generation Moto 360 smartwatch started in Russia. The model was first presented at IFA 2015 in September last year, and soon the watch went on sale in the US and Europe. The model reached our edges with a big delay, but, strictly speaking, in the case of watches on Android Wear, this is not so important, because there is no such technical progress as in smartphones. But in terms of design and software, the new Moto 360 is a significant step forward.

We tell you what smartwatches are, and also gave specific recommendations for choosing, where, in particular, the first Moto 360 model appeared - it still remains, in our opinion, one of the most interesting options on Android Wear (especially considering the low price).

But the Moto 360 of the second generation significantly expands the arsenal of options both in case design and in straps. So, the case is now available in two versions: smaller (with a case diagonal of 42 mm) and a larger one (case diagonal - 46 mm). Different straps are also available. Three variants are officially sold in Russia - all leather: beige (female), black and brown.

The problem is that we cannot combine different case and strap options. That is, you simply choose one of three models: women's gold 42 mm with a beige strap, black universal 42 mm with a black strap or men's silver 46 mm with a brown strap. On the one hand, this choice for the start of sales is clear: there is one model for each group of buyers. And this is still better than nothing (recall that the first generation Moto 360 was not officially sold or sold in Russia).

On the other hand, this is only a pale semblance of the variety offered to American users. Recall that they have a Moto Maker service, with which you can choose not only the strap, the size and color of the case, and there are a variety of options, but even the color of the bezel (the bezel around the case). That is, in fact, you get an absolutely personalized model. Not like in Russia, where "the boys go to the right, the girls to the left, the undecided stay where they are."

However, one can hope that new options will appear in the future, because a start has been made. In the meantime, the main competitive advantage of the Moto 360 can be considered the presence of a female model with a round screen. All previous smartwatches with a round screen were quite bulky (LG G Watch R, LG Watch Urbane, Huawei Watch, the same Moto 360 of the first generation). So it's all the more interesting how successful this modification was. Today we have the opportunity to understand this in detail, because it was the female Moto 360 that came to us for the test.

Let's take a look at its specifications. For convenience, the second generation Moto 360 will be called Moto 360 2015 (since the watch was released worldwide in 2015).

Now let's compare the key specs of the Moto 360 2015 with those of its predecessor, as well as the Samsung Gear S2 and Asus ZenWatch 2. The Samsung model is interesting in that it also has a round screen, while the Asus ZenWatch 2 are attractive because of the wide choice of straps and the presence of two sizes. In addition, all these watches came out almost at the same time.

As we can see, the Moto watch has increased the screen resolution and battery capacity in the larger model, while the other technical parameters remain practically unchanged. In terms of comparison with the Samsung Gear S2, the forces are roughly equal, but Samsung has a smaller battery and a smaller display (even compared to the more compact version of the Moto 360 2015).

Equipment

The watch comes in an eye-catching round box, like the first version of the Moto 360. Probably not very practical, but it looks great.

Inside is wireless charging, a 5V 550mA charging block with a Micro-USB cable soldered into it (that is, it cannot be disconnected). In principle, there is nothing to worry about, since you cannot directly connect the watch to the computer. But it's still strange why it was impossible to make a separate cable.

Also included are two leaflets with information about safety and the initial setting of the watch. It is significant that the leaflets are in Russian. In terms of wireless charging, it is generally similar to that of the first generation Moto 360, only smaller. But it is interesting that the new watch can be charged without any problems from the previous charge.

In general, we were not surprised by the packaging and packaging of the watches, although there is nothing to criticize here for.

Design

The appearance of the female model makes an ambiguous impression. The small diameter (the watch is completely round) is, of course, a plus. The first Moto 360s were too big, after all. But the case is still thick and the strap is very narrow here. Some imbalance turns out.

Another thing is that the large thickness (11.4 mm) is gracefully disguised here: the lower part of the case, adjacent to the hand, is made of black plastic, in contrast to the rest, which is metallic, golden in color. This creates the illusion that the watch case is thinner than it really is. And the bevel of the bezel also works for the same task.

Like the previous model, there is a heart rate sensor on the back side, and a button on the right side of the case. A quick press on it turns on the screen, a long press opens the main menu. However, the button is now located opposite the 2, not 3, as before, and the back of the case is made of glass, not plastic. This is definitely a plus.

The watch strap is made of thin soft leather. It is reported to be genuine leather from Horween. Color - light beige. It is in good harmony with the golden color of the case. The leather of the strap a bit resembles in its properties the strap made of smooth granada leather for the Apple Watch, but the clasp here is ordinary, traditional, and the leather itself, apparently, is less carefully crafted - on the specimen that we had on testing, you can see folds and "Wrinkles", although it is clear that the watch was in use for a relatively short time.

That is, the strap quickly loses its presentation and novelty. However, it is possible that the straps made of smooth granada leather for the Apple Watch will last not much longer in perfect condition, and their price is much higher (only a strap without a watch costs more than 20 thousand rubles!).

The halves of the strap are attached to the Moto 360 2015 case with standard loops with levers, so if you wish, you can easily pick up an alternative third-party strap (the main thing is that the width is the same - 16 mm).

Let's note one more detail of the case design: the glass that protects the screen rises slightly above the level of the bezel, and although it is hardly noticeable, you feel it when you touch the screen, and this decision is perceived positively.

In general, we would rate the watch design rather positively. At least, the almost complete absence of bezels around the screen, the soft delicate leather of the strap and the successful disguise of the thickness of the case are nice features. And the ability to change the strap is a definite plus. But, subjectively, it would be better if the strap thickened towards the hinges, and, of course, I would like a little less thickness. In addition, we do not have the feeling that the watch has become much more beautiful than the Moto 360 of the first generation. That is, there was no qualitative leap forward.

Screen

The watch is equipped with a color touch round IPS-screen, the diagonal of which is smaller than that of the first generation Moto 360 (although there is also a Moto 360 2015 model on sale with the same screen diagonal as before), but the resolution is higher. Thus, the pixel density has increased. However, the main drawback for which the Moto 360 manufacturers have been criticized a lot has remained - the presence of a dead zone at the bottom of the screen.

Alexey Kudryavtsev, editor of the "Projectors and TV" section, carried out detailed screen tests. His expertise is below.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are good, but slightly worse than that of the Google Nexus 7 (2013). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens:

The screen of the Motorola Moto 360 (2015) is slightly lighter (image brightness 123 versus 116 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the watch screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, much better than that of Google Nexus 7 2013), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower speed than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control, the maximum brightness value was about 580 cd / m², the minimum - 140 cd / m². The maximum brightness is very high, which means, given the good anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at a good level. For complete darkness, the minimum brightness is too high, the presence of automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located in the lower part of the front panel, where there is no longer an LCD screen) helps. In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. In total darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 14 cd / m² (suitable), in an office lit with artificial light (approx. 400 lx) sets to 165 cd / m² (normal), in a very bright environment (corresponds to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight- 20,000 lx or slightly more) increases to 550 cd / m² (sufficient). As a result, the automatic brightness control function works adequately.

The viewing angles are good. The color temperature of the white field is 7700 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of an absolutely black body (ΔE) is 0.8 units. Overall, these are good numbers for a consumer device. LED backlight with typical spectrum for white LED backlight with blue emitter and yellow phosphor:

The color gamut is very close to sRGB:

As a result, colors have a natural saturation. This device uses an IPS matrix. The micrographs show the typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

Apparently, the LCD matrix does not have any transreflective properties, so the image on the screen is visible only when the backlight is on. In general, the quality of the screen is high.

Operating system and software

As we have repeatedly noted, on all existing smartwatches with Android Wear, the operating system works the same and is available in latest version... The second generation Moto 360 is no exception.

There are no surprises here. As with the first generation Moto 360, the Motorola Connect app is available here as well as the Moto Body. The task of Moto Body is to measure your heart rate, collect and display statistics on the number of steps and calories burned.

As for Motorola Connect, this is an application for fine-tuning the background when charging the watch and conveniently personalizing the watch faces.

Perhaps the most curious of the pre-installed watch apps is Together. This app is available on all Android Wear watches and is not a Moto 360 exclusive, but we haven't looked at it before, so it's time to talk about Together.

The idea is that two owners of Android Wear watches can exchange graphical messages with each other without using a smartphone. Simply put, you can draw an emoticon on the screen - and the person with whom you interact will immediately see it.

In words, everything looks clear and beautiful, but we decided to try it as it really is. It turned out - not really. The whole connection sequence is very long and dreary. Some actions need to be performed on the smartphone, some on the watch, constant crashes and freezes (more precisely, something happens to you - for example, the "Create Together Profile" icon is spinning, but this can continue as long as the watch will not go to sleep) ...

When you finally go through all the circles of hell and make two watches friends, you will see that you can use this only if the clock is nearby. As soon as they disperse, you will have to re-establish the connection, and this is very problematic. The question is, what is the point then? However, the range of possibilities here is not bad. You can send a photo or emoji, draw a picture or an emoticon - it will be recognized and sent already in the form of the corresponding icon. For example, if you draw a heart, the watch will prompt you to send a heart icon.

Dials

There is nothing particularly interesting in terms of dials here either. Well, except that the already mentioned ability to customize the content of some dials (this may apply to purely decorative elements, and informational ones - for example, what is displayed in widgets).

Alas, there are no exclusive dials here. Standard set. Although picking up something quite cute and looking good on the female version of the Moto 360 is quite possible.

Autonomous work

Since the watch has a relatively small battery, the battery life is average here. The clock will live for about a day with the screen always on and with medium-intensity use (no Google Now and generally active interaction with the clock - only displaying the time and notifications). They will work about the same amount when the screen turns off and more intensive use.

But if you forget to put them on charge at night, then even in the most economical mode, they are unlikely to be enough for the entire second day. Alas, such is the price for compactness.

conclusions

First of all, we can be glad that Moto 360 has finally officially entered the Russian market. Considering that there are not so many Android Wear devices, each new model is especially valuable.

Second consideration: The 42mm Moto 360 2015 is the smallest round Android Wear smartwatch right now. True, compactness does not extend to thickness (in this parameter Moto 360 is not a record holder), but this thickness is slightly masked by a successful design.

We can say that the second-generation gold Moto 360 is the first truly women's round watch on Android Wear. This is also facilitated by a narrow strap made of soft smooth leather, the length of which and the number of holes are such that even the smallest handle will feel comfortable in this watch.

Let's move on from the pros to the cons. The main disadvantage is the price. It is completely unclear what Motorola was guided by, setting the price so much higher than that of the first generation model. At the start of sales, the black Moto 360 of the first generation (with a black leather strap) cost $ 250, while the new Moto 360 of the same size, with the same strap and case color, cost $ 350. At the same time, from the point of view of capabilities, they are no better: both generations of watches run on the same OS version, contain identical software and a set of sensors, and the differences noticeable to the user concern only the screen resolution and the material of the back surface of the case.

In Russia, the situation is even more unfavorable for Moto 360 2015: here the official price for the 46 mm version is 28 490, and the Moto 360 of the first generation can be bought from "serovoz" for 12-14 thousand. That is, the difference is more than twofold. In such conditions, the choice between the first and second generation Moto 360 is clearly not in favor of the new product. But there was no 42mm version in the first generation. So if you need a compact watch, then you need to look at the Moto 360 2015. Besides, they are cheaper - 26,490 in Russia and $ 330 in the USA. But all the same, the price seems to be definitely overpriced. In comparison, the women's version of the Asus ZenWatch 2 with a beige leather strap costs US $ 149. Well, devices that are almost identical in terms of technical specifications, features, materials, brand level and even release date more than double in price!

In Russia, we would call the Samsung Gear S2 Classic the main competitor of this model, which are much more innovative and no less beautiful (and no less compact), but at the same time cost about 20,000. You can, of course, remember the Apple Watch Sport, which fell in price and now cost about 26,000 for the 38mm version with a silicone strap. But, strictly speaking, Apple Watch and Moto 360 are not competitors, because if a potential buyer has an Android smartphone, the Apple Watch will not work for him, and if an iPhone, then it is definitely better to take an Apple Watch (since Android Wear watches are compatible with iOS only partially). But Samsung Gear S2 Classic is a serious contender!

A very powerful argument in favor of Moto 360 2015 could be the Moto Maker service, which allows you to choose the color of the case and bezel, the type and color of the strap when buying a watch, since this level of personalization of design for other smartwatches is not yet available, but Moto Maker does not work in Russia. , and of the entire Moto 360 line, we only have three models. So we will wait for Lenovo to expand the range of watches, or even better - to reduce the price. Because, we repeat, the device itself turned out to be successful.

In conclusion, we suggest watching our video review of the second generation Moto 360 smartwatch:
