Decoupage table lamp. Decoupage master class: updating a table lamp Decoupage of an old table lamp

The decorative part of the lampshade, made of fabric or thin plastic, quickly becomes unusable, but do not rush to throw away the necessary item.

The main value of a table or other lamp is the mechanism into which the light bulb is inserted and the electrical component. This master class discusses in detail the decoupage of a lampshade for a ceiling lamp, night light or floor lamp. The old lamp will become an exclusive piece of furniture that you will be happy and proud to show to your guests.

Preparation of materials and important points

The basis is a lampshade with a small “hole” on the side. It is made of plastic, covered with textured pink paper on top. The seam of the coating is clearly visible.

In order to not only update, but also restore the lampshade, eliminating the hole, you will need:

  • round napkins for decoupage (you can take good quality three-layer serving napkins), in the example - a pattern of spices for mulled wine, such a pattern does not need to be adjusted;
  • white napkins and pink note paper;
  • scissors;
  • liquid wallpaper glue;
  • PVA glue;
  • glue gun and rods for it;
  • red beads;
  • white matte paint or primer;
  • brushes: small and wide, cm 5-6;
  • iron;
  • sponge for washing dishes (clean, dry);
  • water.

Any napkin with a solid pattern that matches the color and theme of your interior will be suitable for decoration. If you are looking for how to update a floor lamp shade with your own hands, then use the shades found in the bedroom. Pictures of fruits or baked goods are suitable for a lamp in the kitchen; toys and cartoon characters are suitable for a children’s lamp. Mulled wine spice motifs are used here.

A simple direct decoupage technique was used for decoration; read more about all technologies on our website “Women’s Hobbies”.

Preparing the lampshade and napkins for decoration

First, you need to seal the hole, the gap in the lampshade. Keep in mind that you cannot achieve a perfectly smooth surface - the napkins will not lie flat, so there will be some texture.

Seal the gap by placing pieces of plastic over the defect. From the inside out, glue a pink piece of note paper (sold in square briquettes) onto PVA glue.

On the front side, glue several layers of white napkin onto PVA glue and wait until the structure dries.

Secondly, for decoupage, the lampshade needs to be primed for better adhesion of the napkins to the surface. Instead of a primer, you can use white matte paint. Brush the primer or paint over the entire surface with a wide brush, creating an even layer of white. This paint dries quickly, since it is applied in a thin layer on paper, in about half an hour.

After the paint has dried, you can proceed directly to the magical process of decoupage. Napkins need preparation. To prepare them for the process, you need:

  • remove two layers (usually they are white), separating the colored layer;
  • Carefully iron the colored layer from the inside out with an iron to level it out.

Attention! When working with an iron, follow safety precautions! When you get carried away with creativity, you may forget to turn it off or accidentally get burned!

The lampshade in this decoupage master class has a top ring diameter of 19 cm and took five napkins to decorate. Another two were spent on processing the interior surface and decorating the exterior.

The napkins taken for decoration had one feature. They are completely colored, except for one fragment of the design - a star. The author of MK did not like how the white star lay on the pink, white-painted lampshade, so she began to overlap the star on the previous one with each subsequent napkin. Thus, the color and general mood were the same.

In the photo there are napkins with roses, since initially it was planned to place fragments with roses on top of the “mulled wine”, but in the process of work it turned out that this was unnecessary.

Decoupage technology step by step

After preparation, you can start decoupaging the lampshade with your own hands. Here it is better to use the help of another person so that he holds the lampshade firmly enough and in weight. Sometimes you can put it on the table, but make sure that nothing unnecessary sticks to the product.

The surface should be lubricated with glue in parts. Wallpaper glue was used, by analogy with pasting walls, since it is well absorbed into the paper and lies flat, and when it dries, it “pulls in” all the irregularities.

Apply glue to one part and smooth it out with a wide brush. Apply part of the napkin, trying to press evenly on all sides. The glued napkin is almost impossible to move later without ruining the work: after the thin paper is saturated with glue, it breaks when you try to move the fragment.

In this MK, decoupage napkins are glued to the lampshade in a circle, and the remains are folded inward. White stars have already been mentioned above.

Attention! To remove excess glue, use white layers of used napkins.

Moving carefully, gradually lubricating the lampshade with glue, pressing the napkins, cover the entire surface. Perhaps in some places the paper will become slightly matted or excess glue will accumulate under it, but when drying and final decoration, these details can be easily corrected.

This is what the lampshade looks like from the inside.

Cut the rounded edges of the napkins into several parts and fold them inward, having previously coated the inside with wallpaper glue.

After this, the inside of the lampshade looks untidy, so it’s worth adding fragments of napkins there. This will take about 5-7 minutes. For even gluing, use a dishwashing sponge, and sometimes use only your hands, pressing one or another fragment with your finger.

Let the work dry thoroughly.

Due to the fact that the designs are not aligned, there is some confusion on the front side of the decoupage lampshade. This can be easily corrected with the help of clear images of the orange pieces that were left over from decorating the inside of the craft.

Cut out the oranges (or better yet, tear off fragments with your hands) and place them where they are missing in the composition. Glue them in the same way: coat with glue, carefully pressing a fragment of the pattern and smoothing it from the center to the edges.

Finally, cover the lampshade with glue on top and dry it again.

Completion of work and finishing touches

After the main steps are completed, all that remains is to cover the lampshade decorated using the decoupage technique with acrylic varnish, but this is an optional step. For dry rooms, you can cover the design with hairspray, but keep in mind that it cannot be washed with water. Usually this is not required; it is enough to wipe off the dust with a special velvet cloth for cleaning.

If you decide to cover the product with acrylic varnish, do so in a day after the main layers of glue have dried.

To complete the look, you can decorate the work with large red beads using a glue gun. These decorative elements complement the brown-orange hue of the mulled wine spices and will catch the sun during the day.

Interesting! After completing work on this interior detail, it is difficult to say exactly where the seam and the hole were located.

If you are a fan of decoupage, then be sure to take a look at our other master classes, in which you will make something stylish and fashionable.

Decoupage requires virtually no skill, so don't be afraid to start, even if you're taking on the job for the first time.

Today, decoupage is widely used for the design of a variety of items - from furniture to souvenirs and jewelry. But preserving a bright pattern on a napkin is not always appropriate and meets the needlewoman’s idea. This master class describes in detail how you can artificially age a decoupaged surface using the example of a fabric lampshade for a table lamp.

Decoupage of a lamp (lampshade) is a pleasant and generally uncomplicated job that allows you to renew a tired lamp. Having mastered the technique of decoupage with the effect of aging, you will be able to decorate any other objects in this style.

To decoupage a table lamp shade, you will need:

PVA glue;

glue gun or superglue;

glue brush;

napkins for decoupage;

household sponge;

Decoupage lampshade with aging: work sequence

1. Before starting work, prepare a napkin by lightly spraying it with a spray bottle and ironing it with a warm iron. This will correct creases and folds that could distort the design when gluing.

2. Separate the top colorful layer of the napkin from the inner ones.

3. Since the height of the lampshade is much smaller than the size of the napkin, select a part of the pattern that will be used for decoupage and trim off the excess with scissors.

4. The conical shape of the lampshade will not allow the design to be pasted in a continuous piece, so it is necessary to cut out the design with oblique cuts.

5. At the request of the needlewoman, the lampshade can be completely filled with flower motifs, or it can be done in fragments, as in the sample.

6. Lubricate the area where the pattern is glued generously with PVA glue.

7. Place a piece of napkin on the wet adhesive surface.

8. Using a soft, wide brush, smooth out the napkin, gluing it to the surface.

9. Glue the remaining parts of the pattern end-to-end to the already pasted motif. Small overlaps are allowed, as well as a violation of the design - a disorderly order of colors on a napkin will hide this.

10. When the lampshade is completely covered, leave it to dry. This is necessary so that the paint from the napkin pattern partially transfers to the fabric covering of the lampshade.

11. After the lampshade has completely dried, begin aging it. To do this, wet a household sponge well and walk with its soft side in a circular motion over the pasted surface. The napkin will begin to roll under the influence of the sponge, and some of the paint will transfer to the sponge, so it is important to wash it frequently.

12. Let the lampshade dry. After drying, use a clothes brush to thoroughly exfoliate the rolled parts of the napkin. The drawing will become much lighter, with a worn effect.

13. Cover the lampshade with a thin, even layer of PVA glue - when it dries, you will get a matte surface.

14. Using a glue gun or superglue, glue black or dark gray beads into the centers of the flowers.

Using decoupage it is easy to hide some surface defects of the lampshade - small cracks or stains. A new item from a store can be aged, but something “with history,” on the contrary, can be updated.

Irina Gribanova specially for the site

For the sample, a lampshade with a fabric covering 13 cm high was used, the diameter of the base of the cone was 25 cm.

To decoupage a lampshade you will need:

  • shade;
  • glue gun;
  • scissors;
  • PVA glue;
  • cotton lace 4-5 cm wide;
  • “stream” braid of bright color;
  • buttons;
  • napkin for decoupage with images of chickens and roosters.

Decoupage of lampshade, table lamp - master class with photo:

1. If the lampshade is not new, but has served well and bears the imprint of time in the form of dust and stains, it should be washed with a sponge and soapy water, and then be sure to let it dry thoroughly.
2. Determine the consumption of braid and lace by measuring both bases of the lampshade.
3. Divide the napkin into pieces along the folds.

4. Separate the bottom white layers of the napkins. Only the top bright drawing is useful for work.

5. If the napkins are wrinkled, you can lightly spray them with a spray bottle and iron them with a slightly heated iron.
6. Lubricate the place where the first element of the napkin is glued with PVA glue.
7. Place a fragment of a napkin on a damp surface. Iron the napkin with a brush, pressing it well to the surface - the hygroscopic material will be saturated with glue, and the napkin will stick to the surface. Use a brush to smooth out wrinkles and bubbles.

8. The design of the napkins can be cut along the contour, cutting off the background, in the case when the main color of the lampshade matches the intended design.
9. Since the lampshade has the shape of a cone, it will not be possible to glue fragments of napkins into the joint. Therefore, before gluing the second drawing, first place the fragments overlapping and trim off the excess background - while making sure that the drawing of the rooster or hen itself does not overlap each other.

10. Glue the second drawing by analogy with the first. If there are areas of the lampshade that are not sealed, you can make “patches” on them from scraps of napkins.

11. Cover the entire outer circumference of the lampshade, alternating patterns.

12. Using a glue gun, attach the lace to the lower edge of the cone so that half of its width covers the joints of the napkin and the edging, and the rest forms the “skirt” of the lampshade.

13. Between the drawings, glue buttons of arbitrary size and color onto a drop of hot glue. The variety of sizes together with cotton lace only emphasizes the rustic style of the product.

14. Glue a bright “rivulet” braid around the top hole of the lampshade - its waviness will hide the flaws of uneven joints.

If the interior lacks individuality, it's time to update it and do something with your own hands. Designer Natalya Korol suggests remaking an old lamp using the decoupage technique.

Materials and tools for making a lamp:

  • lamp base (table or pendant)
  • shade
  • three-layer napkins with a pattern
  • PVA glue
  • acrylic paint
  • aerosol varnish

How to make an original lamp

First of all, we apply a layer of white paint to the lampshade, and while it dries, we separate the design from the napkins that we will apply to the lamp. Don't worry if the edges of the napkins are torn - this will only make our task easier.

The next layer of paint is decorative. We chose gold paint, which we applied with a sponge.

Immediately, without waiting for the paint to dry, apply pieces of napkins and secure them with a brush with PVA glue. It is necessary that the glue completely saturates the napkins and aligns them with the background of the lampshade.

Let the paint dry and to consolidate the effect, spray the lampshade with a transparent aerosol. An alternative is regular hairspray.

The base of our lamp can also be decorated with remaining paint and other decor. Our lamp is ready - all that remains is to screw in the light bulb.

Another great idea to decorate your home with your own hands is to create an original lamp using the decoupage technique. We will tell you how to do this in this master class from the “Decoupage” series.

To decorate a table lamp with decoupage, you will need to stock up on the following materials:

  • desk lamp;
  • paper napkins;
  • acrylic spray paint;
  • glue for decoupage on hard surfaces;
  • facet varnish;
  • stained glass paint;
  • flat brush;
  • palette knife.

Decoration technique:

Cover the table lamp, cleaned of dust and other contaminants, with ocher-colored aerosol acrylic paint.

Think about the composition, select napkins with the desired pattern and remove the top layer of paint from them. Carefully tear off the pieces you need.

Before gluing, create a composition on the work surface, choosing the most advantageous option.

Using decoupage glue on hard surfaces, sequentially stick all the decorative elements of the composition.

While the paper is still damp, use your fingers or a brush to carefully remove the excess tissue and cover the design with another layer of hard surface decoupage glue.

Using a palette knife, apply a thick layer of beveled varnish to the areas of the lamp free from decoupage.

The drying time and the thickness of the cracks of the beveled varnish depend on the thickness of the layer. Since we applied the varnish quite thickly, we had to postpone further decoration for a day to dry the lamp.

After the varnish has completely dried, cover the cracks with stained glass paint.

We offer photos of several more ideas for decorating lamps and lamps with decoupage. Please note that in order to decorate the lampshade, you need to use decoupage glue on the fabric and not on a hard surface. Everything else is basically the same. You can decorate both the metal or wooden structure on which the lamp is held, and the fabric lampshade at the same time. The possibilities are endless:
So, easily and simply, and, most importantly, quickly, you can make a beautiful table lamp, or rather, decorate an ordinary lamp, turning it into a completely different piece of furniture. Nothing is impossible for creative people!
